Next to him on the front row is Larry Pegram on his Leo Vince/Foremost Insurance Ducati 848 qualifying fourth, each using Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks. Joining Rapp, last year s Daytona 200 winner, in the front two rows of the grid are this year s Daytona 200 winner, Rapp s Attack Kawasaki teammate Chaz Davies, qualifying sixth on his ZX-6R. Next to Chaz on row two is Andrew Nelson with the seventh-fastest time of the session on his Ducati 848, with M4 EMGO Suzuki s Martin Cardenas taking the outside spot on row two with the eight-best time in qualifying. With Pirelli riders owning five of the top eight places on the grid, Saturday s event promises to be riveting. In Supersport practice Pirelli riders were led by Blake Young on his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600, with the fifth-fastest circuit of VIR s 2.25 mile track. The ever-impressive Bobby Fong set the seventh-best time of the session for the Safety First Suzuki Team, again making his way quickly to the front of traffic at a technical course. Martin Cardenas was ninth fastest with Stave Rapp rounding out the top ten, all on Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa DOT race tires. On Superstock s big bikes, Blake Young rode his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000 to the fourth-quickest time of the day. Robertino Pietri was fifth fastest on his Roadracingworld.com Suzuki. Pietri s teammate, Chris Ulrich, was tenth quickest despite still recuperating from a serious hand injury. David Anthony had the eighth-best time of the day in Superstock. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: Team M4 EMGO Suzuki got their Virginia International Raceway weekend off to a strong start on Friday as Martin Cardenas qualified on the second row for Saturday’s Formula Xtreme race and Blake Young registered a pair of top-five practice performances. On the same day it was announced that the former World 250 Grand Prix rider would be returning to Team M4 EMGO Suzuki in 2009 to contest the all-new Daytona Superbike class, Cardenas posted a 1:32.399 to earn the eighth slot on the FX grid. The Colombian had to deal with tricky changing conditions as heavy rains hit the area just prior to the session. He clocked his fastest time late in the session aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 and will seek to earn his third podium of the season in the class. Young led the way for the team in the Supersport class, posting the fifth best lap of the session at 1:27.785. The Wisconsin native was followed by Cardenas in ninth at 1:28.301 and Cory West, who was 15th at 1:28.645. Coming off a victory and a close runner-up in his most recent two Superstock finals, Young is primed for a strong finish to the season on his GSX-R1000 Superstock machine. Despite suffering a fall in Friday’s session, he was still fourth fastest in the class at 1:26.487. “Superstock was going pretty good,” Young said. “We made some big improvements before we had a little get off in the last couple minutes. We’ll figure out why we fell and work out some more set-up issues for tomorrow. I think we’ve got a pretty good bike so far. Things are coming together nicely in Superstock this season and we’re just starting to really gel as a team and with the bike. “Supersport went well too. Pirelli brought some good tires so we’re excited for the race.” On Saturday Cardenas will attempt to score yet another FX podium after the team qualifies for Sunday’s Superstock and Supersport finals.
