Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes set the fastest time Friday during AMA Supersport practice at VIRginia International Raceway. Hayes lapped the 2.25-mile course in 1:26.796, which is just off Jason DiSalvo’s four-year-old lap record of 1:26.781. Shortly after Hayes turned his fastest time, however, he crashed in Turn Two, ending his session. Hayes said he crashed in exactly the same spot where Attack Kawasaki’s Chaz Davies crashed one lap earlier. “I came through on my same line on the next lap,” Hayes told Roadracingworld.com, “and everything went quiet and I got completely sideways.” Hayes said he tumbled quite a bit but did not suffer any injuries. His bike, however, ripped a hole in its engine cases and oiled the track. The session was temporarily halted so the oil could be cleaned up. Hayes could not continue riding once the session was restarted because the back-up CBR600RR that he and teammate Jake Zemke share was set up for Zemke at the time and could not be changed to Hayes’ settings quickly, he said. Davies was transported to an on-site medical center where his left foot/ankle was X-rayed. No bone fractures were found, according to Davies’ team.
