See the presentation here: ~/files/2008aug-dmg-ama-classes.pdf~ At the meeting, American Honda’s Ray Blank and American Suzuki’s Mel Harris pressed for adoption of the proposed 2009 AMA committee rules formulated in 2007, instead of World Superbike rules they had originally requested. Members of the committee that developed those rules included American Honda’s Chuck Miller and Yoshimura Suzuki’s Don Sakakura (representing American Suzuki). Based on that input, on July 19 DMG then announced that it would adopt the proposed 2009 AMA committee rules formulated in 2007, and issued this press release: ~https://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=33327~ Rules for specific classes were also released on July 19, as seen here: ~https://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=33328~ ~https://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=33331~ ~https://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=33334~ Speaking to private team managers at Mid-Ohio last Saturday evening, DMG President Roger Edmondson said that the manufacturers have now changed their positions again and are demanding that existing 2008 AMA Superbike rules be run in 2009 and beyond. Edmondson characterized the process of trying to work with manufacturers as being “a waste of time” that could have been better spent finalizing other details for 2009, including a three-year HD TV deal with five hours of programming from each race weekend. Adoption of the July 10 DMG proposal could have addressed recent demands from manufacturers that rules be made by a third party instead of DMG: The July 10 proposal committed to FIM World Superbike rules for the premier class and based rules for the second 1000cc class on FIM Superstock rules. DMG and Edmondson have now come under fire from certain elements of the media, for changing DMG’s plans, with no mention of the fact that the changes were made based on input from the manufacturers, and with no mention that the input from manufacturers has changed at least twice.
