Attack Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp finished third in the Pro Honda Oils AMA Supersport race Saturday, July 19 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but Rapp’s finish could be taken away from him pending a technical inspection of his ZX-6R’s cylinder head. That’s the word from AMA Pro Racing, which sent out the following e-mail Tuesday morning, three days after the race: “The Supersport results from Laguna Seca are still provisional, pending the outcome of a technical inspection of the Attack Kawasaki cylinder head from third-place finisher Steve Rapp. The cylinder head in question will be compared to other production cylinder heads from the same model at AMA headquarters in Pickerington, Ohio. The results of the inspection will be made available as soon as they are complete.” Rapp was stripped of his first-ever AMA Supersport race win June 8 at Road America, when AMA Pro Racing officials ruled he had used an illegally-modified tire in the first portion of the wet, red-flag-interrupted race. In that case, Rapp’s crew had installed a rear Pirelli slick that the tire company had hand-cut into a replica of an intermediate rain tire instead of giving Rapp an intermediate rain tire with molded grooves. Rapp did not know he violated a rule and actually won the restarted race with a legal, DOT-labeled rear tire. On that occasion, AMA Pro Racing issued a formal press release disqualifying Rapp within minutes of the race’s finish.
