Teammate to 2008 Daytona 200 winner Davies, 2007 Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp earned a second-row starting position with the sixth-quickest time of Friday’s final qualifying session, each rider using a set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires, just like the ones available to every track rider. As if any enthusiast needs to be reminded, all of this happened at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, at the combined AMA Superbike/Moto GP event, which includes only two AMA classes (Supersport and Superbike) and only one GP class (Moto GP). Stay tuned for more from the racing action at Monterey. The AMA Supersport race takes place Saturday at 4:35 pm, Pacific daylight-savings time. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: YOUNG, WEST, AND CARDENAS IN ACTION AT THE USGP Team M4 EMGO Suzuki opened the combined MotoGP/AMA Superbike Championship weekend at Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA on Friday. With the Superstock and Formula Xtreme classes sitting the weekend out, the squad spent the day focused on Supersport and Superbike and set about working back up to speed following an extended summer break between rounds. Blake Young, Cory West, and Martin Cardenas all displayed similar pace aboard their Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 Supersport bikes while qualifying for Saturday’s 17-lap contest. Young earned a slot on the outside of the third row, qualifying 12th fastest with a best lap of 1:28.279 around the undulating circuit. West was two positions further down in 14th, claiming a spot on the fourth row with a time of 1:28.454. Cardenas, making his return to the Supersport class after missing the previous three races due to injuries suffered in a crash at Fontana, CA, will line up alongside West after posting the 15th fastest time in the session at 1:28.511. “We started off a little bit slow but we got going quicker in qualifying,” Young explained. “We’re not quite there yet. Coming to Laguna with the limited track time and it being my first time here with the team and on these tires, I knew it was going to be a fight. But we’re definitely working hard and getting it figured it out.” Young is also competing in the Superbike class this weekend aboard his Superstock-spec GSX-R1000, looking to unlock a few secrets that could prove valuable when the series returns to Laguna Seca for the 2008 season finale. Facing a deep field comprised of the full-time Superbike stars and a number of the top Superstock contenders, the Wisconsin resident was 15th fastest in the class’ single free practice session on Friday with a best time of 1:28.450. “We’re here basically shaking down the 1000, trying to get a good set-up for when we come back for the second time,” he said. “All the Superstock guys are here so we have a good benchmark to base ourselves off of. We’re just trying to get as much track time as we possibly can get really dialed in.”
