Two-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies is the fastest of seven riders halfway through the first day of a two-day MotoGP test session on the new 2.62-mile infield road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in Indianapolis, Indiana. At approximately 2:00 p.m. local time, Spies had recorded a best lap of 1:46.144 on his Bridgestone-shod Rizla Suzuki GSV-R. Spies is the only rider present who is scheduled to actually race in the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix September 12-14. The other riders present are primarily test riders, although some are racers in other series. FIM regulations restrict testing by current MotoGP racers, but Spies is considered a test rider, as he is not a regular in the MotoGP Championship, and will race at Indy as a wild card. The test is open to the public free of charge, and over 1000 fans have already accepted the invitation Tuesday. Weather conditions are nearly ideal with temperatures in the low 80s with sunny skies and a light breeze. Testing continues until 6:00 p.m. local time. Unofficial Test Times (as of 2:00 p.m. local time): 1. Ben Spies (Suzuki), Bridgestone, 1:46.144, 51 laps 2. Niccolo Canepa (Ducati), Bridgestone, 1:46.277, 54 laps 3.
