So far this year, the Roadracing World Action Fund has purchased and shipped 27 new soft barrier sections for deployment at various racetracks around the country, thanks to the fund-raising efforts of the motorcycle racing community. Total contributions made to the Roadracing World Action Fund now total $608,824.97. Many of those soft barriers carry race organization logos and/or dedications to recognize special fundraising efforts, including WERA on soft barriers sent to Road Atlanta, NESBA on sections sent to Blackhawk Farms, CMRA on sections destined for use at tracks in Texas, LRRS for sections deployed at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and CCS/ASRA on barriers for use at various CCS and ASRA events. Dedications displayed on soft barriers sent to LRRS for use at NHIS include “In memory of Connor LaFrance” and “In memory of Loretta Rispoli,” (mother of racer James “The Rocket” Rispoli), to reflect donations in their memory. The latest donation from Penguin Road Racing School instructor and former racer Stephen Nogueira of $651 brought the total amount donated in memory of Connor LaFrance to $7647.11. Those donating in memory of Loretta Rispoli included: Lakeside Hospital Operating Room, $300; Southern New Hampshire Internal Medicine, Derry, NH, $250; Harv’s Harley-Davidson, $100; Steve Wineke $50; Dian & Jerry Hicks, $50; Christopher Lane $50; Lee Winters, $50; Ralph Trecartin , $50; Sigma Iota Sigma of Gorham, Maine, $50; Linda Grant $40; Alexa Krueger, $25; and Sandra Goodman $25, for a grand total of $1040 to date. Sections displaying “In Memory of Andrew ‘Skip’ Kuykendall” were sent to Road Atlanta; a total of $2307 was donated in his memory. Making Contributing A Habit The Joseph C. and Esther Foster Foundation, a perennial contributor since 2002, has donated another $1000, for a grand total of $23,000. Managing Director Daniel F. Haft wrote, “Thank you for all your organization does to enhance the safety of motorcycle roadracing around the country.” Others who have made yearly contributions a habit include Charles Buse, who has made a donation each December each in the past five years; his overall total is $1400. Mr. & Mrs. Frederick C. Bittner have donated a minimum of $2900, about enough for one section of inflatable soft barrier, every year since 2002; this year’s contribution brings their grand total to $18,250 – $14,050 for road race and $4200 listed for dirt track. For the second year in a row, SoCal Track Days donated $500, for a grand total of $1000. Two more donations (of $20 and $50) from Roadracing World Action Fund’s Most Frequent Contributor Darrin Talbott brought his all-time total to $1750 from 20 contributions over four years. Racing Community Efforts Innovative, creative and generous: These are words to describe the entrepreneurs, businesses and race organizations whose fundraising efforts for the Action Fund go far beyond the call of duty in terms of time and energy expended. Included in that group is Cannoli Race Photography/Edmond De Mattia. Cannoli posted the following on the WERA BBS: “Here are the pictures I took during Saturday’s races at Summit. As always, the pictures are free, I just ask that you make a small donation to the Air Fence Fund to help make all of us safer. Please put ‘Pictures from Cannoli’ in the comments section when you make a donation.” Riders making Cannoli Photo donations include: Sean McDowell, $40; Timothy Tilghman, $25; Thomas Cutter, $25; and Craig Hirko, $25. Track Daz and Montclair Yamaha hosted a Daytona 200 party at Hooters and raised $2561 for the Action Fund. Over the years, Track Daz’s annual Daytona Hooter’s parties have brought in contributions totaling $5611. EDR Performance had a Calendar Party that earned $402 and the www.R6Messaganet.com community brought in $1600. Viets Performance donates a portion of sales to Action Fund for purchases of Armour Bodies Pro Series bodywork, which so far has earned $70. Kurveygirl.com continues its fundraising efforts, donating a portion of its sales to the Action Fund, with a donation of $1400 bringing its grand total to $2950. When “The Discovery Channel’s Birth of a Racer,” a documentary about the building of the MotoCzysz roadracer, premiered, MotoCzysz hosted a premier event in their hometown, Portland, Oregon, at McMenamins’ Bagdad Theater March 15th. The event was opened to the public at no charge but donations for the Roadracing World Action Fund were encouraged with all proceeds to be matched by MotoCzysz for soft barriers at Portland International Raceway. A total of $4000 was raised by this effort. And finally, it’s always a good idea to sign up for a matching fund program if your employer offers it. Dale Blackman’s donation of $1000 earned a Verizon matching donation of $1000 for the Action Fund. Blackman was recently featured in Roadracing World magazine’s monthly column, “Saved,” which highlights safety success stories on the racetrack. Graham McIntyre also signed up for his company’s matching fund program and doubled his donation of $125.02 to $250.04, as did Robin Caron, who doubled her $25 donation to the Action Fund, both through the Microsoft Matching Gifts Campaign.
