Racer Lee Acree may be released from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina today, following successful surgery on his lower left leg earlier this week. Doctors transplanted abdominal tissue and an artery from Acree’s stomach to the leg in a complicated operation that took about eight hours. The transplanted tissue covered exposed bone and restored normal blood flow, and was covered using a skin graft. According to Acree, surgeons basically removed the muscles and artery on the right side of his stomach, and that surgery resulted in much more pain than he had experienced with the initial injury. “The worst has passed,” Acree told Roadracingworld.com in a phone call Thursday afternoon. “Today was a pretty good day.” Acree said he has to keep the injured limb elevated for at least another week.
