Marco Martinez won the CCS Florida Unlimited Grand Prix race June 22 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in Homestead, Florida, and achieved a personal best in the process. Martinez holeshot the start from the third row of the grid, led into Turn One, ran his fastest-ever race pace (1:25s) and won the race on his Suzuki GSX-R1000. Lars Remsen passed Michael Rouleau near the halfway point of the race to secure second. Rouleau finished third. After finishing runner-up to Barrett Long in the GTO race and second to Remsen in Unlimited Superbike earlier in the day, Martinez said he realized he needed to change his set-up to have a chance at victory in the Unlimited Grand Prix. Martinez then consulted Eric Gray, of G.M.D. Computrack — Ft. Lauderdale, who improved Martinez’s suspension performance and comfort level with some relatively minor changes. “I needed to make something happen in the Shootout,” Martinez stated, “and it worked. The changes went my way, and I was able to handle the bike the way I wanted to. I was really happy with this finish. I did the fastest lap times since four years ago. I was pretty pleased.” “I’m happy,” Remsen said after taking his first-ever podium in Unlimited Grand Prix. “I was doing the best I could to kind of chase down Mike [Rouleau] and get around him. I just rode as hard as I could.” Remsen won two other races in the day, Unlimited Supersport and Unlimited Superbike. Sean Dwyer earned the most victories at the event, taking home four first-place trophies. The Yamaha YZF-R6-mounted rider won in Middleweight Supersport, Heavyweight Supersport, Middleweight Grand Prix and Heavyweight Superbike, a race he started from pit lane.
