Governor Huntsman Presented With World Superbike Winner’s Helmet TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (June 19, 2008) Representatives of Miller Motorsports Park visited the Governor’s Office in the Utah State Capitol on Wednesday, June 18, to present Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. with an autographed helmet from Spain’s Carlos Checa, winner of both races in the StriVectin-SD USA round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship at Miller Motorsports Park on June 1. Checa, who rides the No. 7 HANNspree Honda CBR1000RR for Ten Kate Racing, approached Miller Motorsports Park officials following the race and said that he wanted to donate his helmet to Gov. Huntsman. The Governor is an avid motorcycle enthusiast and Honda rider himself, and had welcomed Checa and his fellow racers to Utah during a ceremony in Salt Lake City on Thursday, May 29. Checa autographed the helmet, which bears the scars of a frightening crash suffered on Friday prior to Sunday’s two race wins, with the following inscription: “To Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., Utah’s #1 Racing Fan, With My Best Wishes, Carlos Checa.” “In all the gifts that I have received in this great Office of the Governor, this probably is the most extraordinary,” Gov. Huntsman said, “because it is a thing of sheer beauty. But it is a thing that represents excellence and competition and pain, because it has a scratch on it representing hard work and the effort that one must go through to be a champion. I’m going to put it in my office and I will be reminded every day about championship behavior.” Governor Huntsman expressed his sincere appreciation for Checa’s thoughtfulness, and his continuing support for motorsports in the State of Utah and Miller Motorsports Park. The Governor noted that he has recently begun riding his motorcycle on the street again after recovering from shoulder surgery, and that he looks forward to riding on the Supermoto course at Miller Motorsports Park as soon as his doctor gives him the OK.
