Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden will be out of action at least another month as he continues to recover from injuries he suffered in an ugly April 27 incident at Auto Club Speedway. That incident came at the start of the AMA Supersport race, when Martin Cardenas suffered a suspected brake failure and crashed at high speed entering Turn Five. Cardenas’ body flew into Hayden, who was already leaned over in the middle of a turn, knocking him down. Cardenas suffered a fractured left femur. Hayden sustained bruises to internal organs and ribs and — more importantly — a dislocated left ankle, tendon and ligament damage in his left ankle and a fractured left tibia. In spite of having surgery to relocate his ankle and set his bone fracture the night of the crash, Hayden’s leg injuries continue to be what is keeping him off his GSX-Rs. “I’m 100%, outside of my leg,” Tommy Hayden told Roadracingworld.com at Road America. “It’s coming along, not as fast as I would like, but the doctors are happy with my progress. I’m definitely making progress. It’s just kind of a really serious thing. It will be a long process to get back to where I was, so I’m just trying to take all the steps I can and do everything my doctors are recommending and try to get back as soon as I can. “In the end the dislocation was the worst part, but the bone hasn’t 100% healed yet. We’re still letting it heal up. It’s not ready yet, but it will probably be ready before the dislocation. That’s what’s gonna slow me down.” Hayden said none of his ligaments or tendons were torn, but they were all stretched “about as bad as they could be.” The two-time AMA Supersport Champion said he has already started doing physical therapy, but “I have another month before I can even put weight on it.”
