Racer Lee Acree is hospitalized and undergoing treatment to try to save his lower left leg, which was seriously damaged in a collision during the AMA Superstock race at Infineon Raceway May 18. Acree was running very close behind Jason Pridmore when Pridmore’s bike broke, and Acree hit the slowing bike violently, breaking his leg. According to Acree, some pieces of shattered bone weren’t found, and related problems with circulation have caused problems with necrosis, or dying flesh. “There’s no flesh covering the plate,” said Acree on the phone today. “There’s no infection. I had some tissue that died, that mostly was the result of poor blood supply because one of my arteries was damaged from the break.” Acree said he faces several more weeks in the hospital. “The next surgery is Friday and they told me to expect to be here for weeks after that to make sure the flap takes. The most likely scenario is that they’ll take a piece of muscle out of my abdomen with some artery attached to it, splice it onto my leg and cover the opening with that.
