The young rider made an exciting last-lap pass on Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates to take the victory. Yates, meanwhile, had initially taken the lead on his Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 on the first lap and led almost to the very end before finishing second behind Young. Rounding out the all-Suzuki podium was Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Robertino Pietri. This result is Pietri’s first-ever AMA Superstock podium. Currently, Yates leads the overall championship points chase, Young is in fourth place and Pietri is in fifth place. Blake Young: “I led the race on the first lap and then Aaron came by. I was pretty content to just bring home second place for my M4 EMGO Suzuki team and so I just tried to ride my own race in second place. I saw Aaron was running a really fast pace, so I didn’t get too excited because I didn’t think I could catch him. Then, I saw I was getting closer to him and I realized I really wanted the win. Thanks to my guys for keeping their heads down and working hard for me this weekend. I didn’t think Elkhart was going to be that great for me but things really turned around in the race. It’s nice to get the win here at home in front of my friends and family.” Aaron Yates: “The race was pretty uneventful. I got a decent start on the Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Blake was in the lead. I’m not sure where I got by him, but I wanted a clear track to try and get into a rhythm and cruise along. Even though it was wet, I felt like I could run some good laps. I did and I pulled a little gap and, then on the last lap, I got in with some lappers. I looked back to see if anyone was getting close, and I saw Blake. I just tried to finish the lap as good as I could, there were a few times when the bike was slipping around and I really wanted to bring it home and not crash… I guess Blake had made some ground on me and he just motored me coming out of that final corner. There was nothing I could do, he just flew by and that was it. But it was good to come out of Road America with some points and build on the championship.” Robertino Pietri: “It was fully wet at the beginning of the race and my visor was fogging a bit and at the end, even though it was drying out, I couldn’t really see. So it took me a while to get into a rhythm and the first few laps were a disaster. I knew I needed to relax, to remember to breathe and just calm down. So I did and I started to catch up to the front. This is really exciting because it’s my first podium and it’s my dad’s birthday so happy birthday to my dad.”
