This record-breaking win means that defending AMA Superbike Champion Spies is the first-ever rider to win seven consecutive AMA Superbike races. The two-time AMA Superbike Champion was the pole-sitter in this race the first of two in the double-header weekend and led all 16 laps to victory on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000. In addition to this being Spies’ seventh win of the season, it also marks his 25th AMA Superbike career win. Six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin got off the line with his teammate and battled for the lead. In the end, however, Mladin brought home a strong second-place result. Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing’s Tommy Hayden is recovering from injuries sustained at a recent round of AMA Superbike and did not race this weekend. Ben Spies: “The weekend was really good, other than my throwing the bike down in practice this morning. It was a tough race, the pace was really hot. Mat was staying right there, making me work for it. I’ve got to thank my guys because they had to build me a new bike after I crashed. We’re going to do everything we can to try and win another one tomorrow on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000. Right now we want to get another Superbike title and if we accomplish that by winning races and setting records, then great. But basically, we need to finish in front of Mat and to do that we’re just going to keep doing what we’ve been doing because that seems to be working for us.” Mat Mladin: “We’re going to go back and try to get the bike a little better tonight and try for a better race tomorrow. We tried our hardest today on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 but Ben was too quick for us today. His bike was fast, we were slower all weekend and we’ve been struggling a bit on the straights”¦ But after about four or five laps, I tried to put it in tight underneath him but I couldn’t quite make it stick. We need to find some straight-line speed to give us a chance. We’ll see if we can give him more of a hurry-up tomorrow.” More, from a press release issued by Ben Spies’ publicist: Spies Sets Historic SUPERBIKE RECORD Texan earns longest winning streak ever in AMA Superbike ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (June 7, 2008) Ben Spies won the first leg of the AMA Superbike Championship doubleheader Saturday at Road America by 8.786 seconds over Makita Rockstar Suzuki teammate Mat Mladin. It marked Spies’ seventh straight victory in the championship and established a new AMA Superbike record for longest winning streak in the 33-year history of the sport. “It’s great to be the one who finally broke that record,” said Spies, the 23-year-old defending and two-time series champion from Longview, Texas. “My team gave me a great bike today. Hopefully I can come out here tomorrow and extend the streak to eight.” Spies won the race in spite of injuries he suffered in a qualifying crash earlier in the day that resulted in him receiving six stitches to his jaw. Starting from the pole, under threatening skies, Spies battled with Mladin early before steadily pulling clear of his archrival on the scenic four-mile road course. Jamie Hacking was third on a Kawasaki. The victory was the 25th of his career and extends Spies lead in the championship over Mladin to 45 points. “Mat goes really good here at Road America and I knew it was going to be a tough race,” Spies said. “The pace kept getting quicker and quicker. I guess he made a small mistake one lap and I saw I had a little bit of a gap so I just really started to charge and riding like I needed to with fast laps.” Miguel Duhamel established the six-race winning streak record in AMA Superbike in 1995. Both Spies and Mladin had won six consecutive races before, but neither had been able to extend the streak to seven until today. The series resumes on Sunday with the second leg of the doubleheader.
