Less than six weeks after fracturing his leg in a crash, Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas will ride again this weekend at Road America. Cardenas suffered a broken left femur when he crashed at the start of the AMA Supersport race at Auto Club Speedway April 27. The crash was believed to have been caused by Cardenas’ brake lever being knocked out of position during early-race rubbing, leading to the Colombian rider having no brakes as he entered a turn. Cardenas tried very hard to slow his bike and steer it away from other riders, but he eventually crashed and struck Tommy Hayden. Hayden suffered several serious injuries and remains unable to race. Cardenas had surgery to insert a titanium rod into his femur on April 28, but according to the 25-year-old he is now ready to return to racing. “On Tuesday I went to the doctor to get an X-ray, and the bone seems to be very good. So I just had to come here and race this weekend,” Cardenas told Roadracingworld.com Thursday at Road America. “The strength that I have is not the normal strength, but I think I can ride good with the strength and mobility I have. I think it’s going to be fine. The track has two very long straights where you can relax, so it is not very physical.” Cardenas will only compete in Formula Xtreme at Road America. Cory West, who had been filling in on Cardenas’ FX bike, will go back to racing only his own Supersport machine. Michael Barnes, who was signed to race Cardenas’ Supersport bike at three racetracks (Infineon, Miller and Road America), will continue to ride the machine at Road America. Cardenas said he would resume riding his Supersport GSX-R600 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
