DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — On June 6-7, thirty-nine of the world’s greatest two-wheeled teams will descend on Road America for an all-out battle to win Round 3 of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series. Showcasing three classes; The Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins class (SST) which includes motorcycles producing between 90-120 horsepower, the BMW GrandSport Twins class (GST) covering motorcycles producing 75-90 horsepower and Sport Twins (ST) for machines under 75 horsepower, the ability of the riders coupled with the durability of their machines and the team’s ability in the pits all come into play during this spectacular event. Last year Road America fans saw the Aprilia USA teams score the top two positions in the SST class. This season, the defending champions, No. 1 Aprilia USA/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports have already taken the first two wins and are looking to make it a hat trick at Road America. Just seven points behind in 3rd overall is the second Aprilia USA/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports team who want to move up behind their teammates. But, tied for third is Team Hooters Aprilia who would dearly love to take over second place. However, the Touring Sport Ducati team has a different plan in mind. “We have taken second in the first two events,” says team owner “Fast” Frank Shockley, who added a team to the SST class this year. “We are just six points out of the lead and plan to close the gap at this round. We narrowly missed the win last time out. This time it is our turn to put our Ducati 848 in the Number One spot.” Boasting the talents of two-time World Superbike Champion and Endurance World Champion Doug Polen, Brian Stokes and Ryan Elleby, this team is ready to go. Equally as determined is the Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing team of Shawn Higbee and Mike Smith aboard a Buell 1125R. Headquartered in Elkhart Lake and under the leadership of Richie Morris, this team definitely wants to show hometown fans how it is done. Debuting in the SST class this season, they are currently ranked in eighth and that doesn’t set well with this highly professional team. In the battle for the GST class victory last year, Richie Morris Racing put their Buell XB11 in first with Wisconsin’s own James Gang Racing in second. The fight is definitely on between these two popular Wisconsin teams. Currently Richie Morris Racing leads with 65 points and James Gang Racing is in second just three points behind. Leading the fight in the Sport Twins Class is SpeedWerks.com, who took top honors at Road America last year. Behind by one point is Pair-A-Nines piloted by well-known AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Jim Filice and Jay Springsteen. Last year’s ST champions, Filice and “Springer” don’t plan to give an inch. They want to keep their title. Team racing is one of the most exciting spectacles of two-wheeled racing. Not just simply a test of man and machine, this type of racing requires a number of pit stops during each race necessitating the ability of an entire team, not just the riders. The same as in NASCAR, winning often depends on the ability of the crew in the pits. Each stop is critical and every team’s goal is to be the fastest out of the pits and back on the track. Featuring riders from North America, South America and Europe, the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series boasts some of the best known names in two-wheeled racing. This season boasts an incredible field with new teams, teams entering multiple classes and champions returning to defend their titles. Winning is what racing is all about and competition in the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series is some of the most exciting in the world. There s no doubt that the racing will be fast and furious when Round 3 of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series gets underway June 6-7 at Road America. The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series is organized and sanctioned by Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the Grand American Road Racing Association (Grand-Am), based in Daytona Beach, Fla., provides the series with administrative and commercial support.
