An AMA Competition Bulletin issued April 4 stated that drain holes are required in fairing lowers “at all wet start tracks.” Infineon Raceway is not a “wet start” track. The applicable text of the Competition Bulletin follows: TO: All Road Race Licensed Riders and Season Credential Holders FROM: AMA Racing DATE: April 4, 2008 SUBJECT: Lower fairing plugs at wet weather meets 1. Effective immediately… 1.23 Fairings / Bodywork (Page 13) 3. Regardless of precipitation, at all wet start tracks, two holes, 25mm or 1-inch in diameter, must be in the lower fairing. These holes must be plugged during dry track conditions, but may be opened when the Race Manager designates wet race conditions. See the Competition Bulletin: ~https://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/2008CompetitionBulletin.pdf~ The Competition Bulletin seems to indicate that the current AMA Tech regime run by Jim Rashid–which ordered teams to drill drain holes in fairing lowers at Infineon Raceway this weekend–is not actually familiar with AMA regulations. To make matters worse, the hard plastic drain-hole plugs issued by AMA Tech at Infineon deteriorate rapidly when exposed to heat, as from an exhaust system routed nearby. The prospect of issued plugs deteriorating and falling out of a fairing lower during the weekend is a very real possibility. Which would, of course, negate the purpose of requiring oil-catching fairing lowers in the first place.
