(May 17, 2008) Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider Ben Spies, 23, of Longview, Texas, won the pole for the Kawasaki AMA Superbike Showdown Doubleheader Saturday with a record time at Infineon Raceway. Spies turned a lap of one minute, 34.732 seconds on the challenging 2.32-mile, 12-turn circuit aboard his factory Suzuki GSX-R1000. The circuit has hosted AMA Nationals since 1969. His time established a new motorcycle track record at Infineon. Spies also held the old record of 1:34.991 set last year. It marked the third consecutive Superbike pole at Infineon for Spies dating back to 2006. The pole was 18th for Spies in AMA Superbike. That moved him into a tie with fellow Texan Doug Polen for second on the all-time career AMA Superbike Pole Wins List. Spies, the defending and two-time American Superbike Champion, is the youngest rider in the history of the series to reach that number of pole wins. Spies talked about tying Polen on the all-time AMA Superbike Poles list. “He was one of my heroes and it was one of the stats I didn’t know about,” he said. “That’s good, but right now there’s really no time to celebrate pole position records or passing people up in wins lists. I have enough on my hands to trying to crawl back into this championship and win races right now. That’s what I’m focused on.” The pole gives Spies a valuable championship point, helping him in his quest to gain on series leader and teammate Mat Mladin the AMA Superbike standings.
