CCS Florida – Jennings GP – Jennings, Florida May 4, 2008 Michael Rouleau ran an undefeated weekend at Jennings GP winning three for three, including the show stopping Unlimited Grand Prix. Rouleau started the day with victory on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 in the GTO race. The race got off to a rocky start with a red flag early on, unfortunately setting the pace for the rest of the day. Rouleau was gridded up front and was able to nab an early lead and maintain his dominant position to the checkered flag. Darren Luck, Alex Miniaci, Robertino Pietri (who was riding a borrowed Suzuki GSX-R750 track day bike) and Brad Graham rounded off the top five. Rouleau was back out front again early in the Unlimited Superbike race and finished ahead of Graham, Jeff Lampe, Lars Remsen and Mark Carbajal. The Unlimited Grand Prix race got off to a rough start, with a red flag for an incident in Turn One at the race start. Greg Melka nabbed the holeshot at the restart and led the first lap. By lap two, Rouleau was up front with Suzuki GSX-R600-mounted Luck close behind and looking for a way around. With the two front-runners battling it out for the top spot, even more intense was the race for third, with that spot constantly being challenged. Payton Sassaman ran the fastest lap of the race on the final lap as he worked his way from the last row up to third place. Rouleau took the checkered flag with Luck in second, followed by Sassaman, David Weber, and Pietri. On the podium, Rouleau was a gracious winner giving credit to his competition by stating, “When you’re running in front of these guys, you know that they have a better pace. It’s just that you’re counting the time. You’re counting the clock. Every time you come by the checkered flag and you’re still in the lead, you’re thinking, ‘OK, the next lap is the one they’re going to pass you on.’ Darren and these Sassaman boys have been running really fast all day. I heard somebody behind me and I actually thought it was going to be one of the Sassaman boys right away. But, of course it happened to be Darren. And, you know, I mean, I’m just a menace for him. I’ve never had his pace. Even with him on the 600, but I’ve gotten lucky and I’ve beat him. But that isn’t going to last for long. He’s only going to take so much of that before he starts tapping me on the shoulder as he goes by.” Sassaman commented on his fast lap time of 1:16.6 (which he did while working through traffic), saying, “It was crazy just trying to get through everyone. Everyone was so close. I was just trying to make everything count in the corners. My bike was working great. I can’t say anything else.” The young Georgian made the most time through the back section of the track. Sassaman took home two first-place trophies for his victories in the Middleweight Supersport and Middleweight Superbike classes. Steve Wenner also ran an undefeated weekend in the lightweight classes winning all three of his races. He worked his way through traffic from a third-row start in GT Lights to take over the lead in the day’s first non-red-flagged race. Behind him the battle for second place raged between Garrett Rick and Fernando Ferreyra, who was, unfortunately disqualified for running without his transponder. Wenner took the checkered flag with Rick, Stephen Hill, Huntley Nash, and Scott Coccoli rounding off the top five. Wenner did start on the front row of the 125cc Grand Prix and was able to get out front early. He finished ahead of Andres Calderon, Alex Nieves, Jr., Coccoli, and Parker Steele. Wenner started from the second row in the Lightweight Grand Prix race and worked his way to the top spot to finish ahead of Adam Loeffler, Nash, Mark Evry and Scott Robertson. Robert Dougherty and Garrett Rick were three-time winners, as well. Dougherty won the GTU, Formula 40 and Heavyweight Superbike classes, and Rick won SuperTwins, Lightweight Superbike and Thunderbike. UNLIMITED GRAND PRIX RESULTS: 1.
