Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden has returned home and Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden is ready to go home following injuries sustained at recent AMA Superbike Championship events, according to their manager. Tommy Hayden (who was hit and knocked down by the body of Martin Cardenas, who crashed early in the AMA Supersport race April 27 at Auto Club Speedway) is ready to leave Queen of the Valley Hospital, in West Covina, California, and return to his home in Owensboro, Kentucky, but “a little bit of a fever” is delaying his discharge, according to Steve Dicterow, a member of the Haydens’ management team at International Racers. “He’s ready to go home,” said Dicterow, “but they want to keep an eye on him and that fever. They don’t think it is an infection, just his body fighting back to health after all of that trauma.” Tommy Hayden suffered a dislocated left ankle and a broken left tibia, both of which were surgically repaired by Dr. Thomas Bryan late on Sunday, April 27. Published reports stated that the eldest Hayden brother also suffered a cracked rib and lumbar damage, but Dicterow said doctors never confirmed rib or lumbar fractures, only bruising. Tommy Hayden also suffered a bruised lung and kidney. In the meantime, Roger Hayden (who crashed at high speed when he was hit from behind by Robertino Pietri April 19 during AMA Superbike qualifying at Barber Motorsports Park) has returned to his home in Owensboro, Kentucky after spending nearly a week in Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare in Louisville, Kentucky. Roger Hayden suffered fractures to the left side of his pelvis and lumbar area (which are going to be allowed to heal naturally) and a badly broken and ground-down left little finger. Roger Hayden had a total of three operations on the finger, the third being an amputation of the digit at the first knuckle, according to older brother Nicky Hayden. “I believe he’s home,” said Dicterow, “but I haven’t been able to get a hold of him. I understand he will be able to return to riding relatively soon, but that’s exactly why I need to get in touch with him to figure out when.” Dicterow confirmed that he, Roger Hayden and the Kawasaki MotoGP team have been working on a deal for the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider to race a Ninja ZX-RR as a wild card at the two U.S. rounds (the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix and the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix) of the 2008 MotoGP World Championship. “That’s what everyone’s plan has been, to get him wild card rides at Laguna Seca and Indy,” said Dicterow. Asked if that plan included Roger Hayden testing the Kawasaki MotoGP racebike at Indianapolis Motor Speedway or elsewhere prior to those races, Dicterow said, “Yes, but I don’t know where the testing would be. It hadn’t gotten that specific yet.”
