Hayes, 57 8. Eslick, 55 9. Gobert, 49 10. Carter, 42 More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Rome, Georgia: Pegram popped a cork for Pirelli in Saturday’s Formula Xtreme race, taking third place after a race-long battle for the lead. At the Auto Club Speedway’s checkered flag, Larry Pegram had his team Leo Vince/Foremost Insurance Ducati 848 at a drafting distance of 2.244 seconds from race winner Jake Zemke, after 17 laps and 24 minutes and 34 seconds of racing. In the near distance from there was Steve Rapp on his Attack Kawasaki in fourth, paced by his teammate Chaz Davies in fifth. In sixth was M4 EMGO Suzuki rider Martin Cardenas, giving Pirelli four of the top-six positions in the FX final. Davies is now second in points, just 3 from Zemke’s 94, with the next three places also occupied by Pirelli riders: Rapp, Pegram and Cardenas. At fourth fastest it’s a first front row for Robertino Pietri for Sunday’s Superstock race. Pietri, riding for Roadracingworld.com Suzuki, set the season standard back at Daytona tire testing, laying down the fastest lap in the Superstock class. Now backing that up with his front row grid position at the Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California, Pietri had Blake Young on an M4 EMGO Suzuki qualify in fifth right behind him. Other Pirelli riders qualifying in the top ten for Sunday’s race include Chris Ulrich, Pietri’s teammate, at eighth, and Hawk Mazzotta and Scott Jensen in ninth and tenth, riding for HALOF Racing/Bravo Condoms and Team Jensen, respectively. The Supersport bikes hit the track for a session but qualifying was deferred to Sunday due to high winds sweeping down from the San Gabriel Mountains. Hot winds. In the Supersport session Cory West ripped out the fourth-best time for his M4 EMGO Suzuki team. West said, “Coming here I was hoping for a good result but I’ve been relaxed at the speed I’m going so now I’m looking for more than just good results.” West’s teammate Blake Young, doing double duty in Superstock and Supersport, set the seventh best time for the day, with teammate Martin Cardenas winding up with the eighth best time. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: CARDENAS SIXTH IN FONTANA FORMULA XTREME Team M4 EMGO Suzuki overcame difficult windy and hot conditions at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA to register solid race and qualifying results on Saturday. Martin Cardenas put in another consistent performance aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 to finish sixth in the 17-lap Formula Xtreme contest. The Colombian got off the line quickly, moving up into fourth on the opening lap before settling into sixth by lap three and holding strong to the flag. Cardenas finished took the checkered flag just tenths of a second behind his former 250cc World Grand Prix teammate, Chaz Davies, just missing out on his third consecutive top-five finish of the season. The former Spanish Supersport champ now sits fifth in the 2008 FX title race with 84, just 10 points out of first. “I’m a little disappointed with how things went,” Cardenas said. “We expect to finish on the podium and we didn’t do that here at Fontana. As the race wore on, I seemed to be riding better but the group at the front had worked away from me. We almost got one position back at the end but now we’ll come back and try to get a better result in Supersport.” Blake Young missed out on a front-row grid position for tomorrow’s 17-lap Superstock final by a slim 0.006-second margin. As a result, Young will open the race from the inside of the second row aboard his GSX-R1000, qualifying fifth at 1:25.750. Young, Cardenas, and Cory West will qualify for the Supersport contest on Sunday morning as Saturday’s qualifying session was rescheduled due to delays brought about a need to secure barriers that were blown out of place by the wind. West led the way for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki in the class’ practice session, setting the fourth fastest lap at 1:27.518. Young (seventh — 1:27.654) and Cardenas (eighth — 1:27.886) were also in the free session top ten. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will wrap up their Auto Club Speedway weekend on Sunday with Supersport qualifying followed by the Superstock and Supersport races. More, from a press release issued by Kawasaki: Attack Kawasaki’s Rapp and Davies Finish in Formula Xtreme Top-Five Fontana, Calif. (April 26, 2008) Attack Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp and Chaz Davies raced through the heated and windy track conditions to finish fourth and fifth during the AMA Formula Xtreme race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking finished out the first of two AMA Superbike races in sixth. Kawasaki Under the Kawasaki Tent Racing Hard Rapp is never one to hold back and he rode hard every turn of the 17-lap AMA Formula Xtreme race. He got a good jump off the start and made it around the first lap in fourth, where he stayed the remainder of the race. “I got a good jump off the start but at turn one, people were jumping in and out so I had to pull back a bit,” said Rapp. “I felt pretty good but the bike would get a little loose in turn nine and it would keep me from catching the guys in front of me. The bike and tires were great and overall I’m happy with my performance given the crazy conditions.” Keeping it Close Davies also had a decent start on his Kawasaki ZX™-6R, coming up through the pack and finishing with a solid fifth-place. He has remained consistent, finishing in the top-five at every race this year. “In the first couple of laps I had to pass some people and lost my tow on the straightaway,” said Davies. “That could have helped me try and catch up to the people in front but they ended up a bit of a distance ahead. I still gave it my all each lap, trying to get closer to the front runners.” Jamie’s Race Hacking started his AMA Superbike race with a slight electronic issue but by the first lap he had it under control and was able to come up the pack to finish sixth. “We didn’t have much power in the first lap and I realized it was an electronic issue, but by the first lap I had it figured out,” said Hacking. “I pushed as hard as I could, which really did a number on the tires. I just made sure I brought it home on two wheels. We figured out what was going on and I am looking forward to Sunday’s race, especially starting on the front row.” In the Hunt Steve’s consistent finishes in the AMA Formula Xtreme has helped him move up the point’s standings to third. He is six points behind his teammate and only nine behind the leader. Roger Hayden Update Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden underwent successful surgery on Thursday to remove part of his left pinky finger which he injured during the last round at Barber Motorsports Park. He also fractured his pelvis during the crash, which has caused him restricted motion of his lower body. On Saturday, Hayden took his first trip around the hospital. He is expected to have one last surgery early next week to remove any lasting infection in his finger. Heat and Wind, Not a Good Combo The temperatures at Auto Club Speedway reached as high 98 degrees on Saturday, while winds were gusting up to 20 mph. The drastic weather changed the track conditions and riders had to adjust to their bikes being thrown around a little more than usual. Waiting and More Waiting The high winds caused the teams to sit around for much of the morning while the track secured air fences around the track. The waiting ended up pushing the AMA Supersport qualifying to bright and early Sunday morning. AMA Superbike Series Auto Club Speedway Fontana, Calif. April 26, 2008 AMA Formula Xtreme Series 1.
