Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Aaron Yates earned the AMA Superstock pole position during a windy, red-flag-shortened qualifying session Saturday afternoon at Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California. Yates topped all riders with a lap of 1:24.900 on his Dunlop-shod GSX-R1000. Corona Honda’s Jake Holden (1:25.279), Yates’ teammate Geoff May (1:25.337) and Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Robertino Pietri (1:25.744) also earned front-row starting spots. The 20-minute session was halted after 16 minutes and four seconds when a temporary barrier between Turns Four and Nine was blown over by high winds — for the second time on the day. Daytona Motorsports Group Director of Road Racing Competition Colin Fraser said the portion of the fence that blew over Saturday morning had been secured but another section of the same barrier blew over during Superstock qualifying. In 2003, the plastic Triton Barriers between the two turns were enlarged by adding chain-link fencing their tops to prevent a crashed motorcycle in Turn Nine from tumbling over the barriers and re-entering the track at Turn Four, which actually happened in 2002. In that incident, a crashed motorcycle vaulted the barriers and struck racer Ricky Lundgren, who was traveling in the opposite direction in Turn Four. Lundgren was killed instantly. Riders in the AMA Superstock Group B qualifying session will have 16:04 to do their business Saturday afternoon, but AMA Supersport qualifying has been postponed until Sunday morning so that AMA Superbike Race One and the Formula Xtreme race can be run on-schedule.
