ASRA Team Challenge A&J Recognition Solo Challenge Heartland Park Topeka – Topeka Kansas April 24, 2008 CS Carey Racing Team Lead New Crop of Winners at Heartland Cyclefest After the exciting rounds of racing at Daytona and Carolina Motorsports Park, ASRA Team Challenge blew into the Heart of America CycleFest at Heartland Park-Topeka full force on Friday April 24 for Round 3 of the National Championship. When the green flag flew at 12:05pm under cloudy skies, 30mph winds and 45 degree temperatures, it was anybodies guess what lay in store for the riders in Round 3 of the ASRA Team Challenge Championship. Despite the less than perfect conditions, the CS Carey Racing Team from Shawnee Kansas was off and running. By the time the team of Chris Carey and Matt Hall stopped their Yamaha 600 just about the half-way point of the race, their lead over the field was two full laps. They would need some of that lead to overcome a stop and go penalty because the rider used the wrong course on his out-lap. Even after serving the penalty, Carey Racing held on to a one-lap lead all the way to the finish. This was Carey Racing’s first class (GTU) and Overall win in Team Challenge. Second in GTU and Third Overall was Serpent Racing 1, featuring rider Kevin Gordon with his first race out of retirement and the potent duo of Harwood-Martinez. The Serpent Racing Team riders, who flew out to VIR immediately after the event to compete in the MOTO-ST event, were pleased to leave round 3 with the top two spots in the overall series point standings. Following in third place for the GTU class was Central States Racing, with Matthew Flowers and Paul Gilchrist riding, whose fourth Overall finish moved them up into the number 3 position in the Overall ASRA Team Challenge Championship. GTL featured another first time winner as the 125 GP machine of 2-Stroke Racing, captained by Marc Whitney, brought home the victory by a full lap over second place Shakka 4 Life Racing, with riders Mike Jordan and Steve Wilkins. Ani Racing took third after bad luck stopped their charge thirteen laps into the event. The A&J Recognition Solo Challenge winner was South Florida’s Garrett Rick on his Ducati 848 who finished 61 laps followed by the Honda 600 of James Roderfer Jr. and Vas Rajan aboard his Suzuki 750. This was Garret’s first trip to Heartland Park Topeka and his first trip to the top of the podium in the A&J Solo Challenge. Multi-time National Champion riders Calvin Martinez and Scott Harwood took the Serpent Racing 2 entry to the win in GTO and second Overall. Second in class, KHP Racing, with Jesse Lehman, Tim Aslum and Ray Hofman aboard, held off the “older” , (both Steve Davis and Greg William are over 50 years young), team of Silverback Racing on the way to their first podium finish in Team Challenge competition.
