A delegation from the Daytona Motorsports Group is visiting the headquarters of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers in Southern California this week and has received mixed reactions so far. The DMG delegation–which includes Roger Edmondson, Colin Fraser, Roy Jansen and Bill Syfan of DMG as well as NASCAR Treasurer Tom Bledsoe–met with representatives of American Suzuki Motor Corporation and Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. on Wednesday and is meeting with officials from American Honda Motor Company and Kawasaki Motors Corporation, U.S.A. today. According to American Suzuki sources who participated in the meeting at the company’s headquarters in Brea, the DMG delegation received a generally hostile reaction to a proposed new class structure to take effect in 2009, complete with a threat that the company may pull out of AMA road racing altogether at the end of the 2008 season. The sources said that the proposed 2009 DMG program will include a 600cc Superbike class and the MOTO-ST class, with spec fuel and spec tires. The reaction at Yamaha headquarters in Cypress was more subdued. Industry observers expect a generally combative reception for the delegation at American Honda headquarters in Torrance and Kawasaki headquarters in Irvine today.
