From a press release issued by the International Rett Syndrome Foundation: Piedmont, California, March 31, 2008 The Lilia B. Munn Foundation and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation are excited to announce today that four-time and current AFM Champion Dave Stanton will join the race for a cure as a Rett Racer in the 2008 AFM season. Stanton will seek to increase awareness and promote fundraising for Rett Syndrome research by proudly displaying RETTSYNDROME.ORG on his custom Helimot leathers as he pilots his Mach 1 Motorsports 2008 Yamaha R1 in search of his fifth AFM #1 plate. “After meeting Lilia and understanding more about this terrible disorder, I was excited about joining the effort and combining my love for racing with helping those afflicted by Rett Syndrome. I hope that everyone in the motorcycling community will join us in finding a cure by making a donation at rettsyndrome.org”. says Dave Stanton. Keep watching as additional racers are announced and proudly display rettsyndrome.org on their leathers. About Rett Syndrome Named after Austrian physician Dr. Andreas Rett, who in 1966 described the syndrome in a medical journal, Rett Syndrome is a devastating neurological disorder, afflicting almost exclusively girls. While there are nearly 4,000 known cases of Rett syndrome in the United States, the disorder is genetically linked to more widespread neurological disorders such as autism, mental retardation and schizophrenia. Rett symptoms begin to manifest between the first six to eighteen months of life and eventually incapacitate the affected children so they cannot survive without constant care. The disorder causes seizures, respiratory and gastrointestinal abnormalities, and a variety of muscular and motor impairments.
