Six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin was unofficially the fastest rider today on the final day of a two-day AMA team test at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Riding his Dunlop-shod Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000, Mladin unofficially lapped the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course in 1:23.55. Mladin’s time was not quicker than the AMA Superbike lap record for the track, which is a 1:23.104 set by Mladin’s teammate Ben Spies during qualifying last September, but Mladin’s time is faster than the best-ever race lap for the track, a 1:23.614, which was also done by Spies last September. Spies was not at the test at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and his participation in next week’s test at Infineon Raceway is questionable as he continues to recovery from minor knee surgery, which he had March 11 in Dallas, Texas. “It’s going OK,” Spies told Roadracingworld.com Thursday, “but I’m not able to get on the bike yet. I’m hoping to get on it at Infineon, but nothing’s for sure yet. It turned out it needed more recovery than I thought it would. But if I tried to ride now it could make more potential for problems later in the season. “I’m for sure going to race at Barber, but it’s frustrating. I’m finally 100% healthy, then I have a couple of surgeries in a row and it messes with my fitness and I might lose that extra gear, fitness-wise. But I don’t want to rush it. I want to be ready.” Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden, like Spies, missed tests at Barber Motorsports Park and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and the reigning AMA Supersport Champion will miss the test at Infineon Raceway due to his recovery from injuries to his left hand, which he suffered in a crash during AMA Superbike qualifying at Daytona. “I was on my way to the test,” at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Roger Hayden told Roadracingworld.com. “I went to see Dr. [Arthur] Ting on Tuesday. He took some more X-rays, looked at everything and then told me I’m not ready to ride yet.” Roger Hayden broke the third metacarpal bone in his left hand and tore a ligament located between his third and fourth metacarpal in the same hand when he highsided his factory ZX-10R. All of the doctors Hayden has seen have recommended letting the bone fracture heal on its own, and it is healing just fine, but it is the torn ligament that his keeping him off the bike, he said. Roger Hayden said he fully intends to ride in the races at Barber Motorsports Park, round two of the AMA Superbike Championship series. Unofficial Sample Of Thursday’s Test Times: 1. Mat Mladin (Suz GSX-R1000), 1:23.55 2. Jason DiSalvo (Yam YZF-R1), 1:23.75 3. Eric Bostrom (Yam YZF-R1), 1:24.10 4. Tommy Hayden (Suz GSX-R1000), 1:24.70 5. Jamie Hacking (Kaw ZX-10R), 1:25.13
