The AMA Director who resigned late last year amid allegations of submitting inflated expense reports works as a lawyer for the State of Montana. Dal Smilie’s day job is listed on the official State of Montana website, mt.gov, as Chief Legal Counsel for the Director’s Office of Montana’s Department of Administration. He lives and works in Helena, Montana. Smilie has not yet returned a phone message left for him by Roadracingworld.com, seeking comment. The AMA announced Saturday that it would refer the results of a three-month forensic audit of Smilie’s expense reports to law enforcement authorities. News of the scandal was withheld pending the results of the forensic audit, which confirmed that Smilie submitted and had been reimbursed for falsified expenses over a period of time. Long-time AMA Director Jeff Smith, a former 500cc Motocross World Champion, resigned Friday. Smith served as Assistant Treasurer on the AMA Board and signed Smilie’s expense reports before submitting them to the AMA staff for payment. AMA Directors who are elected by individual members make up half the Board and are reimbursed for expenses related to official travel, such as to and from meetings at AMA headquarters in Ohio. The other half of the Board is made up of Directors who are elected by Corporate Members of the AMA; those directors (or the companies they work for) pay their own travel expenses. Both Smilie and Smith were elected by individual members. The AMA has not announced when and how they will be replaced. Options include interim appointments by a vote of the Board, or special elections.
