From a press release issued by Grand Am: Daytona Beach, Fla. – The stage is set and the players are ready for the curtain to rise for the opening round of the 2008 SunTrust MOTO-ST Series, March 2 at Daytona International Speedway. The kick-off race for the world renowned Daytona 200 Week by Honda, this year’s 500 K SunTrust MOTO-ST Series season opener will give fans a chance to feel, hear and see the thunder as a full field of riders vie for glory and those all-important points on the famed 2.95-mile Daytona infield road course. Featuring three class; The Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins class (SST) which includes motorcycles producing between 90-120 horsepower, the BMW GrandSport Twins class (GST) covering motorcycles producing 75-90 horsepower and Sport Twins (ST) for machines under 75 horsepower, the skill of the riders coupled with the durability of their machines and the teams ability in the pits will all come into play during this spectacular event. Featuring riders from North America, South America and Europe, the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series has some of the best known names in two-wheeled racing. After an intense season of competition, the final race of last year, the 8 Hours At Daytona, saw the Aprilia USA 2 team crowned as the SST champions. In GST, Touring Sport Ducati narrowly aced out Richie Morris Racing by five points to take the victory and in ST, it was the Pair-A-Nines team by seven points. Now it is a whole new playing field with new teams, teams entering multiple classes and champions returning to defend their titles. Team racing is one of the most exciting spectacles of two-wheeled racing. Not just simply a test of man and machine, this type of racing requires a number of pit stops during each race necessitating the ability of an entire team, not just the riders. The same as in NASCAR, winning often depends on the ability of the crew in the pits. Each stop is critical and every team’s goal is to be the fastest out of the pits and back on the track. Taking the win at Daytona International Speedway is something every team dreams of. There is a certain magic about this famed track and everyone wants the honor of taking the checkered flag. Plus, the first race of the season sets the tone for the rest of the year. Everyone can get a good look at the competition and know what they have to do to get into that Number One spot. The action will certainly be fast and furious on March 2 when a full field of SunTrust MOTO-ST Series entrants thunder off the starting grid in an all out attempt to win the first race of the year. The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series is organized and sanctioned by Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the Grand American Road Racing Association (Grand-Am), based in Daytona Beach, Fla., provides the series with administrative and commercial support.
