From a press release issued by UTI Foundation: Merlyn Plumlee Memorial Scholarship The Merlyn Plumlee Memorial Scholarship was established to allow deserving students to study at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute and to carry on Merlyn’s philosophy of generosity, fairness and passion for the sport of motorcycle racing. Merlyn was well-known as one of the top crew chiefs in the United States, representing some of the most prominent racers in the history of the sport. While enormously successful and well-respected, Merlyn was always ready to offer his expertise and support to racers and mechanics at all levels, including privateers and those on competing teams. Merlyn will always be remembered as powerful but humble, a soft-spoken gentleman who treated everyone with respect. The Merlyn Plumlee Scholarship pays tribute to a remarkable man by paving the way for young men and women of similar character and outlook to thrive in the sport that he loved so much. Objective: As a way to pay tribute to the life and accomplishments of Merlyn Plumlee, his family, friends and industry associated have established scholarship(s) (distributed as a tuition grants in aid) for deserving students studying at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute campuses in ether Orlando, Florida or Phoenix, Arizona. Criteria for awarding the scholarship: Enrolled students who meet all other admissions requirements for the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute programs and ALL the criteria below may apply for a $3,000 grant-in-aid (applied to the student’s tuition, prorated over the entire term of the student’s program). There are limited funds for this tuition scholarship during the funded period. To be eligible, a student must: 1. Have a completed and approved Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate year. Be enrolled to begin courses during one of the start dates between January 7, 2008 and December 31, 2008. 3. Clearly express how s/he shares the passion of Merlyn Plumlee for the sport of motorcycle racing and how the scholarship will enable them to contribute to the motorcycle industry. 4. Submit a letter of recommendation from an employer, guidance counselor or instructor; 5. Submits the completed application more than 8 weeks before their start date. 6. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better during the course of their enrollment.
