Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking and Roger Hayden and Attack Kawasaki’s Chaz Davies and Steve Rapp wrapped up a two-day test Friday at California Speedway in Fontana, California, and Hacking and Davies were pleased with their results in spite of less-than-perfect weather and track conditions. For the Monster Energy Kawasaki team the test in California was primarily a shakedown of a host of new Superbike parts in preparation for another test alongside Kawasaki’s World Superbike and All-Japan Superbike teams later this month at the Sepang Circuit, in Malaysia, according to Hacking. “Yesterday was a better day than today,” Hacking told Roadracingworld.com. “Today was kind of cold and cloudy. The track was in pretty terrible shape. It wasn’t the typical wind, but the track was just dirty and dusty. They usually turn on the sprinklers in the evening, and the track was damp in spots. It was just cold, real cold with this weather coming in right now.” The test at California Speedway finished just as a large winter rain storm bore down on Southern California. And dodging winter weather is exactly the goal of traveling to test at Sepang, which is located near the equator. “I think it’s a pretty good plan,” said Hacking, “because you look at the percentages of having crappy weather right now. You can’t go to Laguna Seca. That’s out. If you come here [California Speedway] it’s gonna be cold, and we don’t race in the cold weather, normally. “It’s a lot out of the budget to pack up the team like that and go overseas, but we’re trying to gain on our competitors. We’re trying to do everything we can to do to close that gap and maybe gain an edge. Thank God Kawasaki was willing to step up to the plate and offer us this kind of a test. It’s nice.” Not only is Hacking thankful for the upcoming test at Sepang, he is happy with the progress he and his team have already made with their new ZX-10R. “Things went really well for me,” at the California Speedway test, said Hacking. “I’m pleased. We got the new gas tank and forks and some other key pieces on the bike. The bike’s coming along really well. I’m just tickled to death how things are going with it. “We definitely went faster than last year. I did 24.5 at this test, and I think last year we qualified at a [1:24.8] or something like that. We picked up a pretty good bit, and that’s obviously with the track in pretty rough shape and cold. I’m pretty optimistic for going back here in April.” Attack Kawasaki’s Davies was also pleased with the results of his two days of testing at California Speedway. “Yeah, it’s been good,” the young Welshman told Roadracingworld.com shortly after rain ended the test Friday afternoon. “We were working on electronics and general set-up — bike balance, suspension, gearing — but today was mostly the electronics side of things on the Formula Xtreme bike. Supersport, we didn’t test a lot because we only had standard tires, as we did on FX, but we had even more-standard ones on the Supersport bikes.” Asked about lap times, Davies said they were, “Not too bad. We were right around last year’s race pace in both classes. We were pretty happy with that on the standard rubber, and there were only the Monster guys and me and Steve [Rapp] going around to keep the track clean, as well. The track was a little dirty here and there, so the lap times were good.” Attack Kawasaki, according to Davies, will not test again until the large, multi-team test scheduled at California Speedway in early February. Roadracingworld.com was not able to reach Hayden or Rapp at post time.
