Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo was taken to a local hospital Sunday after suffering a big, fiery crash on his 2008-spec YZF-R1 Superbike during the final day of the three-day Dunlop tire test at Daytona International Speedway. “He was on a ripper,” DiSalvo’s Crew Chief Jefferson Burks told Roadracingworld.com. “He said that lap was gonna be a 1:36 easy. But he went wide exiting the turn coming out onto the back straightaway, dropped his wheel off the edge of the track and highsided big.” According to Burks, DiSalvo and his bike both cartwheeled through the air. DiSalvo landed on his left elbow and suffered a deep abrasion that went all the way to the bone. The bike landed upside down on its fuel tank and burst into flames. The plume of smoke from the fireball went high into the air and could be seen from hundreds of yards away. “He landed in front of the bike, then the bike slid into him,” continued Burks. “Luckily he retained consciousness through it all because he got tangled with the bike and was on fire. He said he had flames coming up inside his helmet, but he was able to get away from the bike before he got burned.” DiSalvo was transported directly to the hospital to have his left elbow cleaned, X-rayed and examined. “Other than his elbow, he’s fine,” said Burks. The bike, however, is a total write-off, according to the team, and was hidden from view of the media and photographers. Before his crash, DiSalvo, like his teammate Eric Bostrom, praised his new-spec Superbike. In fact, DiSalvo went faster in his first eight laps on the new bike Sunday morning than he had gone on his fully-developed 2007-spec bike Saturday. And that was even without an electronic shifter and with Eric Bostrom’s chassis set-up on the new bike. His best time of the day was a 1:37.68.
