Santiago Villa, the Colombian racer who was seriously burned during a refueling pit-stop at Daytona October 19th, and who spent five weeks in the hospital undergoing skin graft surgery and recovering, has returned to racing this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway and has a chance of winning the 2007 CCS Florida Overall Championship. “Yes he does,” said CCS Florida boss Henry DeGouw when asked if Villa had a legitimate shot at winning the Number One plate for 2007. “He’s fourth-fastest in times during practice today and he says he feels better on the bike than he does in the pits.” DeGouw said that Villa leads rival Greg Melka by 265 points in the overall standings, and that both riders have entered 11 individual races scheduled for Sunday. Villa is riding his own GSX-R1000 along with a nearly-stock YZF-R6 borrowed from a friend. The Overall Champion will win the Donald Jacks Trophy, presented at an awards banquet scheduled for February 9th at Miami-Homestead Speedway. “I feel good,” said Villa, via cell phone. “I feel comfortable on the bike. I have a very good finishing average and my points advantage so if I finish near them, top five, I’ll be OK. But I’m planning on winning some of them. When I’m on my bed I feel sick but when I’m on the bike I feel good. We’re going to have some fun tomorrow, I’m planning to win some of them, and I think I’m going to be able to do a very good thing tomorrow.”
