Partly sunny skies, warmer temperatures and a dry racetrack Saturday morning led to serious testing for Dunlop-supported AMA teams at Daytona International Speedway. Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies, the fastest man in Friday’s 90 minutes of testing, went even faster Saturday morning, turning a 1:36.9 on his GSX-R1000 Superbike compared with the 1:37.2 he did Friday. Spies said he worked on dialing in his rear shock Saturday morning, before evaluating a new swingarm. In the afternoon, he plans to start his tire test program. Spies’ teammate Mat Mladin also spent Saturday morning evaluating new parts on his GSX-R1000, including new forks and new bodywork, and reconfirming his chassis set-up from 2007. Unable to test at Daytona last winter due to injury, Tommy Hayden, the third Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki rider, worked on basic race set-up on his GSX-R1000 Superbike while his GSX-R600 Supersport bike sat in the garage. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking worked on finding a baseline set-up on his brand new ZX-10R and turned a 1:38.4 in the process, faster than he went Friday. Hacking said he was searching for front end feel and grip from his new bike. Hacking also said he was very happy that he could focus on his Superbike at this test rather than having to split his time between two bikes, like his teammate Roger Hayden. Roger Hayden used Saturday morning’s track time to test Dunlop’s newest Supersport tires. According to Supersport riders, Dunlop brought two new fronts and two new rears, including a new “qualifier.” Roger Hayden will switch to his Superbike Saturday afternoon. Team Green Kawasaki’s Akira Yanagawa continued development work on his ZX-10R Superbike. At lunch time his mechanics were fitting a new swingarm. American Honda’s Neil Hodgson focused on his CBR600RR Formula Xtreme bike today, trying different windscreens and tires. Hodgson will pick the best of the tires from the morning and do long-distance runs on them Saturday afternoon. He may back on his 2008 CBR1000RR at the end of the day Saturday. With no new parts to test on his Erion Honda CBR600RR Formula Xtreme bike, Josh Hayes started his tire test program Saturday morning. Hayes’ teammate Jake Zemke sorted out some fuel injection maps on his new CBR600RR Supersport bike, before starting his tire test. Graves Yamaha’s Ben Bostrom and Josh Herrin continued working on getting baseline set-ups on their new 2008 YZF-R6 Supersport bikes. Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo continued testing brakes on his 2007-spec YZF-R1 Superbike and started testing tires, while his teammate Eric Bostrom worked on setting up his 2008-spec YZF-R1 and testing brakes and tires on his 2007-spec Superbike. Aaron Gobert found the set-up on his Rockwall Honda CBR600RR Supersport bike earlier enough to start testing Dunlop’s new tires this morning, according to Crew Chief Gary Medley. Aaron Yates was far busier, however, testing suspension components, engine electronics and tires on his Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superstock bike. Yates will switch to his Superbike Saturday afternoon. Yates’ new teammate Geoff May, meanwhile, continued getting acclimated to his new team and new tires. Chris Peris continued setting up and getting used to his new Evan Steel Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superstock bike and turned a competitive 1:41.0 Saturday morning. Testing will continue Saturday afternoon and through Sunday. Spies, however, will not test Sunday, as he has plans to leave to have surgery on his injured shoulder.
