The Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup Selection Event at Barber Motorsports Park took place over three beautiful, sunny days in Birmingham, Alabama. On Saturday and Sunday, the 102 aspiring riders, half of whom rode each day, were given two sessions and more than 30 minutes of track time in front of the Selection Event judges, Kevin Schwantz, Danny Walker, Peter Clifford and Gustl Auinger. From the 102 riders, 44 were chosen to ride again on Monday, based on a combination of progression, potential, lap times, attitude, willingness to learn and several other factors. The riders, including three girls, represented 22 states and several countries, including Bermuda, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Columbia and Argentina. More than 300 guests, including the riders, their parents, guardians and siblings, were kept busy in between the on-track sessions with video games, foosball and videos of 2007 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup races. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum was also opened for all guests to visit the amazing collection of motorcycles and cars. On Sunday afternoon, the riders took a track walk, guided by AMA Senior Road Race Director, Keith Kizer, and learned the nuances of the Barber track in advance of the final day. They also gleaned valuable advice from the judges, whose experience in racing is unparalleled. The judges will deliberate throughout this week, and the final 20-25 riders will be determined and invited to join the 2008 Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup, which will race at AMA Superbike weekends, as well as at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix and the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, which will host a special match race between the top AMA and MotoGP Red Bull Rookies.
