At the end of a crazy, incident-packed, red-flag-interrupted AMA Supersport race Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Graves Yamaha’s 17-year-old Josh Herrin had won the first race of his career, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden had won the AMA Supersport Championship and Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes was being transported to a local hospital. Hayes was battling with Hayden’s teammate Jamie Hacking in the first portion of the race when the two appeared to touch and Hayes got off line and out of shape entering Turn Six, ran wide and off the track and suffered a nasty crash. Hayes, who was already racing with two broken feet, was not seen getting up from his fall. According to Laguna Seca’s Ed Nicholls, Hayes was awake and alert and transported to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. In the restart, Herrin, who had slowed in the first portion of the race after a collision with Hacking knocked his front brake lever out of position, got out in front and stayed out in front to take the win. Hacking finished second and Hayden survived some tense moments to finish fifth, but that was more than enough for Hayden to take the title by three points over Hacking. 2007 Pro Honda Oils AMA Supersport Championship Presented by Shoei Helmets Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Monterey, California September 16, 2007 Provisional Race Results: 1.
