SHANNONVILLE, ON – Cochrane, Alta.’s Clint McBain led the way in practice for this weekend’s final round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Shannonville Motorsport Park Friday. Riding the Suzuki Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000, McBain recorded a fastest lap of one minute, 5.313 seconds in the second of two 40-minute sessions on the 2.45km (1.53-mile) Shannonville ‘Pro’ Track. Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, B.C. set Friday’s second fastest time, a 1:05.354 on the Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company Yamaha YZF-R1 and Parts Canada Superbike Championship points leader Jordan Szoke of Brampton, Ont. was third with a time of 1:05.664 aboard the Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R. “The bike felt good right out of the box,” said McBain, who was fastest in both practice sessions on Friday. “We still have a few things to try, and I want to get the lap record. But my race pace is right there. I ran five laps at the end at 1:05.3.” McBain is one of four riders with a shot at the Superbike title heading into Sunday’s final race of the year. Szoke leads the standings with 262 points, with Crevier second on 236 and McBain third at 225. Kevin Lacombe of Granby, Que. is fourth in the standings with 210 points and retains an outside chance at the crown. Lacombe was fourth in practice Friday with a time of 1:05.804 on the Team Toyota Yamaha / Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1. A race win is worth 50 points and the winner of the Inside Motorcycles Pole Position Award in qualifying Saturday will pick up an additional four points. “I’ve been taking my time and working on some set up ideas,” said Szoke, who is bidding for his second straight title and trying to become only the second rider to score four Canadian Superbike crowns. “We had a good set up here in the spring and we’re moving back towards that.” Crevier, winner of the past two races, is looking for a record-extending seventh Canadian title. In other action at Shannonville, Crevier paced practice for the Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike class. Crevier, who sits second in the standings 19 points behind Szoke, recorded a time of 1:06.412 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Mississauga, Ont.’s Matt McBride was second fastest at 1:06.706 aboard the Riders Choice Suzuki GSX-R600 and Saskatoon racer Brett McCormick was third at 1:06.778 on the Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6R, just ahead of teammate Szoke. Rahul Dua of Brampton, Ont. led practice for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike class with a time of 1:09.999 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Points leader Paul Glenn of Keene, Ont. set the fourth fastest time on his Suzuki GSX-R600. Toronto’s Michael Taylor was fastest in practice for the Thunder twins class with a time of 1:09.247 on his BMW Motorrad Canada BMW R1200S. Michael Leon, who leads Taylor by just five points in the standings, was fifth aboard the Laval Harley-Davidson Buell XB12R. Orangeville, Ont.’s Derek Vammus topped the timesheets in the Suzuki SV650 National Cup class with a time of 1:12.565. Points leader Martin Grande of Montreal was third. Action at Shannonville continues Saturday with qualifying for all five national classes. Races are scheduled to go Sunday.
