Walt Sipp (Buell xBRR), 1:33.732 More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Under the white sky of a Georgia summer, Pirelli riders scored the second-fastest times in Supersport and Formula Xtreme (FX) Friday practices for the AMA Superbike series event at Road Atlanta, Georgia; both barely from the leading times by hundredths of a second. By the end of the day, Attack Kawasaki rider Ben Attard owned the second spot of the FX grid for Saturday’s race, with M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas on the outside of the front row. In the morning Supersport practice in 81% humidity and mid-80s temperatures, adding up to an unpleasant heat index, M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May pleasantly set the second-fastest time on his GSX-R600, just .034 seconds behind Joshua Hayes. Other Pirelli riders with times that could earn spots in the front three rows of the Supersport grid include Attack Kawasaki’s Ben Attard and Steve Rapp with the eighth and ninth fastest times on their ZX-6Rs, and M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Michael Beck and Martin Cardenas with the tenth and eleventh best times of the session, each using Pirelli’s Diablo Supercorsa DOT racing tires. In FX practice, following Friday’s lunch break, Ben Attard nailed the second-fastest time on his ZX-6R prepared by the Attack Kawasaki crew, with Martin Cardenas freezing the clock with the third-fastest time of the session on his Suzuki GSX-R600, prepared by the M4 EMGO Suzuki team. Other riders running on Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks in FX are Steve Rapp with the sixth-quickest time for the Attack Kawasaki team, and Cory West at 11th and Taylor Knapp at 13th. Ben Attard owned the second place starting position by the time FX final qualifying ended, missing the pole position by a slight three hundreds of a second. Attard rode his ZX-6R to its final qualifying spot of second on the grid by using the Pirelli 16.5-inch Diablo Superbike Slicks, not a set of qualifying tires. Joining Attard on the front row is Martin Cardenas on his GSX-R600 with the fourth best time of qualifying. On row two is Attard’s teammate Steve Rapp, posting the fifth-best time for Saturday’s race. Superstock practice ended with Geoff May earning the quickest time of any Pirelli rider, finishing the session with the fifth-quickest time. RoadracingWorld.com’s Chris Ulrich and Gary Mason were eighth and ninth fastest respectively, with third teammate Robertino Pietri setting the 12th-fastest time on the big bikes with Pirelli’s Diablo Superbike Slicks. More, from a press release issued by Kawasaki: Kawasaki Road Race Qualifying Update: Road Atlanta Attack Kawasaki’s Ben Attard turned out an impressive lap time aboard his Kawasaki ZXT-6R during the AMA Formula Xtreme qualifying session to earn a front-row starting position at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. Attard clocked in a fast time of 1:24.315 during the last 10 minutes of the session, earning the second-place position on the starting grid. Teammate Steve Rapp, who suffered a crash during the afternoon practice, turned in a 1:24.315 despite a sore hip, wrist and ankle. He will start fifth on the inside of the second row. In the first of two qualifying sessions for the AMA Superbike class, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden earned the ninth-position with a 1:22.833, while teammate Jamie Hacking rounded out the top-10 with a 1:22.865. The second qualifying session is Saturday morning, which determines the final starting grid of the AMA Superbike doubleheader. The AMA Formula Xtreme race will take place on Saturday afternoon.
