Roadracing World Grand Prix Editor Mat Oxley asked American Colin Edwards about news reports claiming that he will ride a Tech 3 Yamaha in MotoGP in 2008 with James Toseland as a teammate and that Edwards will then return to the AMA Superbike Championship with Yamaha starting in 2009. Edwards’ answers follow. On the Tech 3 deal, with Toseland, who was his teammate at Castrol Honda Superbike/Supersport in the late 1990s: “If it happens I’ll be happy about it. Yamaha is saying they want four competitive bikes and at the end of the day I think they will take care of me.” On doing AMA in 2009: “I’d like to, I’ve been talking with Yamaha U.S. I’ve never won a Superbike Championship there, so I’m very interested to go back there and race after next year. The tracks used to be scary. Three or four years ago I would never have even dreamed of going back there to race. This year I’ve been watching most of the races, keeping a keen eye on them to see what the safety factor is. Growing up in the U.S., and it’s the same in England, there’s corners you know you absolutely cannot crash in, you cannot make an aggressive pass there, you cannot risk putting your nuts on the line in this particular corner because you might die. European guys don’t really grow up with a whole lot of that stuff, it’s basically just getting back in that mode. There’s still a couple of dangerous corners in AMA circuits but for the most parts they’ve weeded out the worst tracks. I’ve been watching and it looks all right.”
