Miguel Duhamel will not be racing in this weekend’s AMA Superbike Championship event at VIRginia International Raceway. Duhamel suffered serious internal injuries and an ankle injury when he had a horrific crash into the Airfence/hay bale/tire-fronted concrete retaining wall in Road Atlanta’s Turn 12 while testing there August 8. Duhamel’s CBR1000RR Superbike led him in and displaced the non-inflatable Airfence Bike II — which was improperly tied down to free-standing hay bales, according to sources with Airfence — leaving the French-Canadian to hit only hay bales and tires. Duhamel spent several days in the Intensive Care Unit of North Georgia Medical Center, from which he was released earlier this week. He has since returned to one of his homes, in Montreal, Canada. Even though Duhamel has amazed many by racing and winning with debilitating injuries in the past, he will not race at VIR, according to American Honda Team Manager Ron Heben. And the team has no plans to put anyone else on Duhamel’s bike at VIR. In fact, Duhamel’s Al Ludington-led crew will not even make the trip to Virginia this weekend. Whether Duhamel races at the other two remaining 2007 AMA Superbike rounds, at Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca, “is ultimately up to Miguel,” said Heben.
