More On New Safety Enhancements At Daytona International Speedway

Daytona International Speedway has already started work on making several safety enhancements to its infield road course based on feedback from all of the sanctioning bodies that race there, including AMA and CCS. Among the many changes on and around the course, all drainage ditches will be filled in, a new underground drainage system will be installed, and all electrical power lines will be relocated underground and their supporting poles removed. This directly affects two-wheeled racers as the power pole in the run-off area of the motorcycle course’s Turn Four will be removed. A new, identical version of the International Horseshoe will be created inside of the location of the existing International Horseshoe. This will not only increase run-off area beyond the new turn, but vehicles will most likely approach the turn with less speed due to it being located closer to Turn One. The pit lane exit road will be extended to where racers will join the track on the outside of the new International Horseshoe. This is intended to prevent vehicles from exiting pit road and diving directly onto the racing line — and in front of vehicles already up to speed on the track — in the International Horseshoe. The area between Turns One and Six (a.k.a. “the barrel turn”) of the 3.56-mile infield road course will be cleared of all obstructions and will become a paved run-off area. These changes are anticipated to be completed in September 2007. The Team Hammer Advanced Riding School & Track Rides event October 18 will be the first activity on the newly-modified version of the 3.56-mile infield road course. The Team Hammer Advanced Riding School & Track Rides precedes the October 19-21 CCS/ASRA/MOTO-ST race event at Daytona.
