Chandler, 93 points More, from a press release issued by Monster Energy Kawasaki: Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Hacking Charges Back to Finish Sixth in AMA Superbike at Laguna Seca MONTEREY, Calif. — Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking made an impressive charge through the pack to finish just outside the top five in AMA Superbike at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. Hacking had a great start from the fourth spot on the grid. On lap one, he went into the final turn a little too hot and ended up back in 18th place. An obviously disappointed Hacking then proceeded to make a remarkable charge towards the front runners making up significant ground throughout the rest of the race. By the third lap, he had moved up to 13th. After only 12 laps in, he was up to eighth place. Still on the charge, he made two final passes to finish the 28-lap race in sixth-place. “To say I was angry is an understatement,” said Hacking. “I was unhappy that I let my team down after they put in so much hard work this weekend. But I really tried to push it as hard as I could. To try and be positive, the finish I had was definitely better than it looked like it was going to be after that first lap.” Hacking has continued to improve and his results this weekend took him from ninth to eighth place in the overall point standings. Hayden didn’t compete in this weekend’s AMA Superbike race, opting instead to compete in both the AMA Supersport and MotoGP race. The next round of the AMA Superbike Championship is set for August 3-5 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. James Ellison, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Suzuki More, from a press release issued by Suzuki Racing: SUZUKI SWEEPS LAGUNA SECA Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies led all laps to take the victory in this weekend’s AMA Superbike race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday afternoon with team mate Mat Mladin second place and Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Aaron Yates third. Spies and Mladin’s Yoshimura Suzuki team mate Tommy Hayden recovered from an off-track excursion to bring home 13th place and pulled within one point of fourth-place overall in the championship standings. This weekend not only saw defending AMA Superbike Champion Spies pick up his sixth pole position of the season and his 13th career pole, but he also extended his lead in the AMA Superbike points chase. The race result also marks Spies’ sixth win of the season in the class as well as his 17th AMA Superbike career victory. Six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mladin, who started from second position beside Spies, carded his 10th podium spot of the season after riding his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 to an impressive second place. Yates, meanwhile, gave the Jordan Suzuki team its first-ever AMA Superbike podium finish with his third-place result. Ben Spies: “We threw down a pretty good time to get the pole position. We got it done but it was close. The Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 was working good right off the truck, though we made a few changes during the middle of the qualifying session that helped us find a little more time. In the race, we got off the line good and that’s key now with Mat and I running the same pace. But Mat rode a great race today and I’m really happy for Aaron that he got on the podium for the Jordan team. Overall, it’s just great to get all three Suzukis on the box.” Mat Mladin: “In qualifying, the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 felt really, really good. At the end of the session we got a little messed up trying to go for a fast lap, but the bike felt good for the race. Unfortunately, we’re having some issues with starts. I pushed hard for a while; we started to catch up to Ben and then got into some lappers and backed off again. But congratulations to Ben for a great race and I’m just looking forward to Mid-Ohio.” Aaron Yates: “In today’s race I got off to a pretty good start on my Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 and I was pushing really hard. I made a couple of mistakes and it took me about half the race to settle down and work my way back up. It feels good to be on the podium because I really wanted to get up there for the Jordan Suzuki team. They’re working hard and the bike is getting better every race weekend. I have a good group of guys behind me and it really motivates me to get up on the podium for them.” More, from a press release issued by Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki: MASON AND ULRICH EARN TOP 15 FINISHES AT LAGUNA SECA Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki faced its fair share of drama in Sunday’s AMA Superbike final at Laguna Seca, but in the end was pleased to pick up a pair of top-15 results against a stacked Superbike field. Gary Mason was 14th, Chris Ulrich was 15th, and Robertino Pietri did not finish the race. The team entered the weekend stronger than ever, recently adding a third rider to the fold. Former British Superbike star Gary Mason joined the team on his Red Devil Roadracingworld.com Suzuki GSX-R1000, and qualified in tight formation with his new teammates, Chris Ulrich and Robertino Pietri. Ulrich led the way in 19th at 1:27.907, with Pietri 21st (1:28.060) and Mason 22nd (1:28.308). The race started in difficult fashion for the squad as Pietri ran into the back of Ulrich’s machine on lap 3, knocking the Californian into the dirt and into last place, while the Venezuelan’s brake lever was broken off in the impact, ending the reigning Latin American and Venezuelan Superbike champion’s race almost as soon as it got started. Ulrich fought hard to regain position and managed to just battle his way into the top 15, finishing 15th at the flag. Team newcomer Gary Mason made an impressive debut, riding a steady race to finish one place ahead of Ulrich in 14th. The team should be able to leverage all that they learned this weekend in the Superstock season finale when the series returns to Laguna Seca to conclude the 2007 season in September. At the end of the weekend Ulrich said, “100% it was a test for us, but still, we race to win. In the Superbike class we’re at a technological disadvantage from the get-go since our team’s focus is on the Superstock this year. With the amount of guys out there on really fast Superbikes, a top-15 finish was our goal. At the end of the day, we had two riders in the top 15, although it wasn’t without a lot of drama. “A couple laps in, Robertino ran into me. He sent me off the track in Turn 2 and I think I was dead last when I came back on. I just started catching guys and working my way through and at the end we got pretty lucky because a couple guys ran out of gas. “For the team, we’ve got a new rider, Gary Mason, and he did great — 14th right ahead of me. He’s going to run out the year with us on his Red Devil Roadracingworld.com Suzuki. He’s a great teammate to have and ‘Tino has been doing a great job the past couple weeks, too, even if he didn’t have his best outing today. “We learned a lot this weekend and that’s the biggest thing. We tried a lot of stuff in a limited amount of track time and we went over a second faster than we did last year. It’s a good bonus.” In two weeks time (August 3-5) Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki will race at Mid-Ohio, one of Ulrich’s best circuits. He scored the Superstock win at the venue in 2002 and finished on the podium in the 250GP class in 2000. “Mid-Ohio is my favorite place in the world,” Chris said. “It’s a shame we don’t go there twice anymore, but I’m definitely looking forward to that. I’m going to push very hard and shoot for a top-five finish there.” More, from a press release issued by M4 EMGO Suzuki: GEOFF MAY QUICK AT LAGUNA SECA Team M4 EMGO Suzuki gained a tremendous amount of knowledge during Sunday’s AMA Superbike race at Laguna Seca that should prove invaluable when the series returns for the championship finale later this season. Geoff May piloted his Superstock-spec GSX-R1000 against the nation’s best Superbike racers and held his own, running in the top ten for much of the race until the extended length of the 28-lap Superbike race took its toll and his machine ran low on fuel as the team expected. As a result, he fell to 12th at the checkered flag. However, the Georgian was encouraged that his racebike and Pirelli tires worked flawlessly through the distance he’ll race in the Superstock class final in September. After the race May said, “We were strong for the first 17, which is what we needed. We figured out a lot of stuff this weekend. The Pirellis were really strong and the bike was flawless. We’ve come a long way. I feel we’ve got a package we can roll off the truck in September and go for the race win in Superstock. “The tires held in there for 28 laps, for me that’s the greatest news I’ve had all weekend.” May spent much of the race battling with fellow Superstock competitors Jake Holden and Ben Bostrom. “It was fun,” he commented. “Everybody was riding clean and we were pushing hard. I knew things in the end would be a little difficult and I ran out of gas. The tank is not quite big enough to run the distance I guess because we topped off on the grid after the parade lap. “All-in-all, it was a very productive weekend for the Team M4 EMGO Suzuki crew. Unfortunately in both classes we had just a little bit of bad luck in the races, but we’ll move on to the next one.” Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will be back in action at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington, OH on August 3-5. More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Rapp Takes Third in AMA Supersport, Adding to Pirelli’s Record-Setting Podiums Rome, Georgia: In pleasantly temperate conditions, after winning the top-qualifying, pole-position for the AMA Supersport race at the combined Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca AMA Superbike/MotoGP event, M4 EMGO Suzuki rider Geoff May led the early laps of the race, eventually finishing fifth on his Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa-shod GSX-R600. Attack Kawasaki’s Steve Rapp carried the Pirelli flag to the podium, riding his ZX-6R to third from his sixth-place qualifying position for Saturday’s race, won by Roger Hayden. May’s M4 EMGO Suzuki teammate, Martin Cardenas, finished seventh while Ben Attard took his Attack Kawasaki home in ninth. Rounding out the top-fifteen finishers were Team Hunter Yamaha’s Cory West in 14th and Michael Beck in 15th on his M4 EMGO Suzuki. Rapp is now fourth in Supersport points at 178, a mere seven points from third place for the season. May is sixth in points with Attard rounding out the top ten, with four rounds remaining. Pirelli riders entered Sunday’s AMA Superbike race using Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks on their Superstock-spec machines. M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May finished 12th with Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich riding his GSX-R1000 to 15th. The next round of the AMA Superbike series is at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, August 3-5, featuring the normal full slate of AMA road racing classes.
