BOWMANVILLE, Ont. – Brantford, Ont.’s Jordan Szoke came back from a fall to win a wet and wild Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike Championship race at Mosport International Raceway Saturday. Heavy rain played havoc with the race schedule for the fourth round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship and only the Pro 600 Sport Bike and Thunder classes were able to run their scheduled events. The Superbike feature class will run a pair of races on Sunday. Michael Taylor dominated the 10-lap Thunder race aboard his BMW R1200S. Szoke was the early leader of the Pro 600 Sport Bike race but the Canadian Kawasaki Motors rider crashed his ZX-6R in turn 5, bringing out a red flag. Szoke restarted from the back of the grid and proceeded to march his way to the front, finally edging Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Performance rider Francis Martin and Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company’s Steve Crevier for the win. The victory was Szoke’s third in the Pro 600 class this season. He extended his lead in the standings to 39 points over Crevier, 203-164, heading into Sunday’s second race in the doubleheader. “I don’t know what to say. I just feel so lucky today,” said Szoke, whose margin of victory was 0.171 secs. “The crash winded me but I didn’t let it bother me.” Martin led most of the race on his Suzuki GSX-R600 but was passed by Szoke at the end of the backstraight on the final tour of the 10-lap race. Taylor was third off the line in the Thunder race but was into the lead by the end of the first lap and continued to ease away. The Toronto rider took the checkered flag 28.385 secs. ahead of North Vancouver’s Darren James on his Buell XB9R. James just held off Kitchener, Ont.’s Michael Ferreira on his BMW R1200 after Ferreira made a spectacular charge from eighth place at the end of the first lap. “We didn’t change that much from our dry set-up for the bike,” said Taylor, whose fastest lap was almost a second quicker than anyone else in the field. “I was just trying to end the race fast so I could get back to a warm hot tub.” With the win Taylor took over the lead in the Thunder standings with 148 points to the 146 of Beaconsfield, Que.’s Michael Leon, who finished fifth on Saturday aboard his Buell XB9R. Both the Parts Canada Superbike and Suzuki SV650 National Cup competitors will run a pair of feature races on Sunday. The first of the Superbike events will go green at 11:00 a.m. and has been shortened from 20 laps to 14. The second Superbike race will be held at its originally scheduled time of 2:55 p.m. and will run over the full 20 laps. Maple Ridge, B.C.’s Crevier qualified on pole for both Superbike races during timed qualifying Friday aboard his Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company Yamaha YZF-R1. Sunday’s schedule will also feature the second races for the Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike and Thunder national classes, as well as rounds for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike and Pro Honda Oils Women’s Cup Challenge. The rain on Saturday forced the cancellation of qualifying for the Amateur 600 Sport Bikes and practice times will be used to set the grid for Sunday afternoon’s race.
