BOWMANVILLE, ON – Maple Ridge, B.C.’s Steve Crevier claimed pole position for this weekend’s pair of Parts Canada Superbike Championship races at Mosport International Raceway Friday and came within a whisker of breaking the lap record in the process. The ageless six-time national Superbike champion took his Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company Yamaha YZF-R1 around the 3.9km (2.459-mile) circuit in one minute, 21.165 seconds, just failing to break the track record of 1:21.160 set by Pascal Picotte in 2005. The performance gave the 41-year-old Crevier his first $500 Inside Motorcycles Pole Position Award of the year and four points toward the Parts Canada Superbike title chase. Series leader Jordan Szoke of Brantford, Ont., who swept both Mosport races last year, will start second in this weekend’s races after setting a time of 1:21.451 on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R, good for three championship points. Kevin Lacombe of Granby, Que. qualified third with a 1:21.649 aboard the Team Toyota Yamaha / Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1. “We seem to have turned things around,” said Crevier, whose best finish this year has been a fourth. “We’ve learned a bit about the bike, sort of figured some things out. The lap times are pretty tight and I was certainly pushing. But I’m pretty confident we’ve got a good race set-up.” Szoke topped the session most of the way after turning a lap of 1:21.699 in the opening moments. He managed to lower his time in the closing 10 minutes but crashed in turn 9 near the end. “It was my fault. As soon as I hit the brakes I just tucked the front. I was pushing maybe a little too hard,” said Szoke, winner of the first three races of the 2007 Parts Canada Superbike season. “But the bike is good and my race pace is always good. We did a lot of laps there at the end in the 21s.” Cochrane, Alta.’s Clint McBain will complete the front row for this weekend’s Superbike races after recording a time of 1:21.845 on his Suzuki Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000. Nepean, Ont.’s Andrew Nelson will head the second row on his Z1 Cycletech Yamaha YZF-R1, ahead of the Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 of Picotte and 15-year-old Brett McCormick on the second Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R. Picotte’s performance was quite impressive as he is nursing injuries sustained at the previous round. Crevier also claimed the Inside Motorcycles Pole Award for this weekend’s pair of Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike races with a time of 1:23.202 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Szoke was a close second at 1:23.212 aboard a Kawasaki ZX-6R and Nelson placed third at 1:23.927 riding his Yamaha YZF-R6. Toronto racer Paul Penzo qualified on pole for the Thunder twins class at a record time of 1:28.445 aboard his Ducati Hypermotard and Montreal’s Martin Grande led Suzuki SV650 National Cup qualifying at 1:33.956. Bolton, Ont.’s Tim Chemello led practice for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike competitors with a time of 1:27.743 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Catherine Nadeau of Lachine, Que. paced qualifying for the Pro Honda Oils Women’s Cup Challenge with a 1:30.248 on her Yamaha YZF-R6. The Amateur 600 riders will qualify Saturday for a race on Sunday. The remaining classes will hold their first races of the weekend Saturday afternoon.
