Roger Hayden, 171 points More, from a press release issued by Team Suzuki News Service: Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies and Mat Mladin continue to dominate the AMA Superbike Championship Series after finishing first and second respectively in the first AMA Superbike race of the double-header weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. Defending AMA Superbike Champion Spies started from pole position, his fifth of the season got the holeshot and led all 21 laps to take the win. This victory is Spies’ fourth win of the season and his 15th career AMA Superbike victory. It also makes Spies the first repeat winner at Miller. Six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mladin, who qualified in second with a lap time less than one-tenth of a second behind his team mate, overcame a less-than-stellar start to bring home the second spot on the podium. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden was gridded on the second row but got an excellent start on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000. The two-time AMA Supersport Champion ran in third place for the first few laps before eventually finishing in seventh position. Ben Spies: “We’ve been getting our butt kicked all year so I had to do something different. We have to ride harder… We need to get some more wins. Pole points are good but they’re not going to get it done. Unless I win the title by three points at the end of the year, getting pole position probably won’t make a difference at all. We have to do what it takes to get a win. I need to ride 110 per cent the whole time. Today, after we got the holeshot, on the first two or three laps I made the same mistake in the same corner two or three times in a row. But I tried to keep it clean and the GSX-R1000 was good for the whole race. It was pretty much a picture-perfect race.” Mat Mladin: “You can’t give up six seconds on the first few laps to a guy whose lap times are similar to yours. I pushed as hard as I could and then about halfway through the race I threw a couple chunks out of the rear tyre and that was pretty much my day. I probably chose the wrong tyre today and again the bad start. To be honest, everyone knows we have launch control now, but it didn’t work. I pushed the button and it didn’t work. So we’ll just have to get things sorted out for tomorrow.” Tommy Hayden: “Today’s race started out real good. The first few laps have been my problem all year, but today it was really good. I’ve struggled some this weekend and I just wasn’t able to run the pace that I needed to stay up front. But I learned some things from being up there with those guys and getting in there at the beginning that I can use tomorrow. Hopefully, tomorrow we can get the same start and then stay up there.” More, from a press release issued by Miller Motorsports Park: Spies Wins First Half of Superbike Doubleheader, Burkhart Takes Supermoto Win at Miller Motorsports Park TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (June 23, 2007) Ben Spies earned a convincing victory Saturday in the first leg of the AMA Superbike Championship twin-bill, part of the Honda Summit of Speed at Miller Motorsports Park. In 100-degree heat, Spies, the defending series champion from Longview, Texas, sprinted away to a fast start on his No. 1 Yoshimura Suzuki from the pole and was nearly six seconds clear of the field by the time teammate Mat Mladin worked his way up to second on lap three. Spies rode to a 7.273-second margin of victory in the 21-lap final. The win extended his series lead to eight points (345 to 337) over Mladin, who was second. Following one of his best performances of the year, Spies remained cautious on the prospects of defending his title. “An eight-point lead is nothing at this point of the season,” Spies said. “We’ve got nearly half of the races still to go. Things went really well today, but I need to string together a number of these kinds of races to have things go the way I want them to go.” Mladin pointed to a problem with his motorcycle’s launch system and an overheated rear tire as the reason for being unable to challenge Spies. “You can’t give up six seconds in the first couple of laps to a guy whose lap times are very similar,” Mladin said. “At about half race distance I threw a couple of chunks out of my rear tire and couldn’t come back.” Jake Zemke was third on a Honda. Zemke, who won a round of the series at Miller last year, is a distant third in the standings with 261 points. He was happy to prevail over Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden for the final podium spot. “Rog was riding an awesome race,” Zemke said. “He was right there and setting a good pace, but I thought I could go a little quicker. “I was able to get about two seconds on him, but I lost it all in traffic. It turned out he was keeping me honest until the end. It was a good race, but we are hoping for more tomorrow.” Australian Aaron Gobert won the Lockhart-Phillips Formula Xtreme final Saturday afternoon. It marked Gobert’s first win of the season. He held off teammate and series leader Josh Hayes by less than a bike length. “It was a really good feeling,” Gobert said of the win. “I was definitely ready for Josh to stick his bike up underneath me at some point, but I did the right things to keep him from getting around me.” Welshman Chaz Davies finished third. It marked the AMA podium finish for the former World Championship competitor. Saturday evening, Mark Burkhart of Pataskala, Ohio, rode his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZ450F to his second Supermoto event of the year in the Plaza Cycles Supermoto Challenge on the MMP Supermoto Course, heading defending champion Jeff Ward of Team Troy Lee Designs Honda Red Bull and Monster Kawasaki’s Chris Fillmore. Local favorite Cassidy Anderson of Provo, Ward’s teammate, led the first half of the 12-lap feature but crashed and fell back deep in the field. He fought back to fifth at the finish. In the Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites class, Team Troy Lee Designs Honda Red Bull rider David Pingree of Temecula, Calif., took the victory on his Honda CRF250R, finishing ahead of Graves Motorsports’ Brandon Currie and Red Bull KTM’s Josh Hansen. The Supermoto Unlimited class was won by Aprilia Rip It Energy Racing’s Ben Carlson of West Bend, Wis., on an Aprilia RXV550, with KTM riders Kurt Nicoll and Josh Chisum filling the podium Earlier in the day, the “Magic of Miller” Celebrity Race took place, with local celebrity Ron Duncombe taking the win ahead of actor/comedian Danny Allen and Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. Duncombe, who normally drives the “Maverik Monster Trakker” monster truck, started from pole and led all the way in the seven-lap race. Allen, co-host of the variety show “B. All Over” on KJZZ, started fourth and worked his way up to second, holding off a last-lap challenge from movie producer Gregg Godfrey that resulted in Godfrey spinning off track and Governor Huntsman moving up from fourth to take the final podium position. In qualifying action, defending Supersport series champion Jamie Hacking broke the class track record to take the pole for Sunday’s feature race on his No. 2 factory Kawasaki ahead of teammate Roger Hayden and Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes. In addition to having the pole for the second Superbike race, Ben Spies will also start first in the Superstock race after setting a class track record time in qualifying today to take the pole ahead of Yamaha’s Ben Bostrom and Jordan Suzuki’s Jake Holden. In time trials for the USGPRU 125 Grand Prix National Championship, P.J. Jacobsen set the fast time ahead of Nobi Iso and Melissa Paris. Sunday’s on-track activities get underway at 8:30 a.m. with warm-ups. The USGPRU will race first, with the green flag flying at 11:00 a.m. The AMA Superstock presented by Dynojet race is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., followed by the Pro Honda Oils Supersport Championship presented by Shoei Helmets race at 2:00 p.m. The final event of the weekend will be the second Superbike Championship race at 3:00 p.m. Ticketing gates will be open from 8am to 5pm. Trackside admission tickets are priced at $35 for Sunday. Grandstand tickets are $50-$55. Tickets are available at the Miller Motorsports Park Welcome Center and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
