This is Spies’ fourth AMA Superstock victory of the year and his seventh career win. Spies currently leads the Superstock points chase. Right on Spies’ heels were satellite team riders Geoff May of M4 EMGO Suzuki in second and Scott Jensen of HALOF Racing Suzuki in third. “It was a tough race,” said Spies. “Geoff took off for the first few laps and I didn’t think I was going to be able to stay with him. But I just tried to be as consistent as possible and we got lucky.” Despite soaking wet conditions for the previous day’s AMA Superstock qualifying, Suzuki riders rode hard enough to fill the front row of the grid. Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich got his second career pole position, as well as his second Road America pole position, with a fast lap of 2:51.375. Spies carded the second spot, thanks to a lap time of 2:53.199. Rounding out the front row were Vesrah Suzuki’s Mark Junge (2:53.984) and M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May (2:54.369). “I knew what my pace was in the wet and I knew I had something for them,” Ulrich said of the wet session. “There were a couple of places I knew I could push and a couple of places I knew I couldn’t. I tried to be smooth on the Roadracingworld.com Suzuki GSX-R1000 and ride like I know how. It’s fantastic to be on pole, it’s something I’ve been looking forward to for years.” The 10-lap race had been rescheduled due to stormy weather but by the time the race started, the skies were sunny and the four-mile track was drying out. May took the lead immediately and held onto it for more than half the race. Eventually, however, Spies took the lead and the win. “The track changed so much from lap to lap that you couldn’t tell what it was going to be like,” said Spies. “Geoff made two little-bitty mistakes that allowed me to get past. I got in the lead and just tried to not make any mistakes myself.” Although he settled for second place, May didn’t go down without a fight. He put in an impressive ride on his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000 and led the most laps of the race. “I just tried to be as consistent and smooth and possible so that I could be there at the end,” said May. Also on the podium was HALOF Racing Suzuki’s Jensen, and this was his first appearance on the Superstock box. “I didn’t expect to be up here today,” said Jensen. “I’ve been struggling all weekend and we gambled a little with our tire choice but it worked out for us. The competition in this class is pretty tough but hopefully this is the start of something new.” All of Suzuki’s road race teams will return for round six of the AMA Superbike Series at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, the weekend of June 22 – 24, 2007. Robertino Pietri, Roadracingworld.com Suzuki More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: MAY SECOND IN ROAD AMERICA SUPERSTOCK Team M4 EMGO Suzuki closed out the Road America weekend with another trophy-winning performance on Sunday, claiming a runner-up finish in the Superstock race one day after taking third in the Formula Xtreme final. Afternoon rain showers prevented Geoff May from showing the pure speed he displayed in the dry on Friday when Geoff led the Supersport session and ran in the top-three in Superstock practice. The Georgian still managed to put in a superb ride in the tricky, changing conditions on Sunday. May powered into the lead early aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R1000 on a damp circuit that was drying by the minute under sunny skies that only broke free of the dark clouds late in the afternoon. He spent the race battling with defending Superbike champion Ben Spies for victory, claiming an extra point towards his title hopes by leading the most laps in the 60k race. At the checkered flag he took his second consecutive runner-up finish in the class. May’s strong finish elevated him into a tie for second in the 2007 Superstock championship race with 144 points. “I really thought I could win the thing the whole time, even down to the white flag,” Geoff said. “I felt like I could get into some corners better and he was better than me in a couple other places. It was a good race. “I’ve got to thank Team M4 EMGO Suzuki, Keith Perry, Barry McMahan, and the boys at Pirelli for making the tire choice. I went on the parade lap on intermediate tires, front and rear, and they weren’t hooking up. I wanted to go out on rains, and they said, ‘No you aren’t going out on rains, you’re going out on slicks’. I went out there on the first lap and discovered that they made the right call.” The Supersport race was run under rainy conditions, spoiling the team’s promising outlook following their strong showing in the class earlier in the weekend. May worked hard to pick up a top-ten place, finishing ninth in the 10-lap race, while teammates Michael Beck (30th, 9 laps) and FX podium finisher Martin Cardenas (44th, 2 laps) were unable to claim the types of finishes they wanted. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will be back in action for the sixth round of the AMA series on June 22-24 at Miller Motorsports Park, in Tooele, UT.
