MONT-TREMBLANT, Que. Brantford, Ont.’s Jordan Szoke will begin his defence of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship from pole position at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant on Sunday. After poor weather conditions forced the cancellation of official qualifying on Saturday, the Canadian Kawasaki Motors factory rider was awarded the top qualifying spot based on practice times from Saturday morning. Szoke toured the 4.275km (2.65-mile) circuit in a time of one minute, 40.255 seconds on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. Szoke is the first winner of the $500 Inside Motorcycle Pole Position Award of the 2007 season. After clear conditions throughout Saturday morning and early in the afternoon, rain began falling heavily shortly before qualifying for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike competitors were scheduled to qualify. At 4:00 p.m. Parts Canada Superbike Championship officials reluctantly made the decision to curtail the day’s activities after inspecting the track and confirming that conditions were too unpredictable. “I’ll ride in any weather conditions but I think there were some mishaps earlier that left some oil on the track, and my only concern was that the rain would spread the oil around,” Szoke said. “When the track is in that condition it becomes a dangerous track.” Szoke is the defending Superbike race winner at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant. “I’ve been out in every session and I’ve been on top of every session,” Szoke said. “My race set up is always good and I have it now. We’re ready.” Pascal Picotte of St-Cecile de Milton, Que. will start second on the grid Sunday after recording a lap at 1:40.579 on Saturday morning on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000. The front row of the grid will be filled out by the Yamahas of Granby, Que.’s Kevin Lacombe (Team Toyota Yamaha / Brooklin Cycle Racing YZF-R1) and Andrew Nelson of Kars, Ont. (Z1 Cycletech YZF-R1). Qualifying was held for the Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike competitors, and Szoke claimed pole position for that race with a lap record time of 1:41.645 on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6R. Picotte was second at 1:42.421 on his Suzuki GSX-R600 and Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, B.C. was third with a time of 1:42.767 on the Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company Yamaha YZF-R6. Szoke actually turned a lap at 1:41.058, but the time came just after the session had been red flagged and was not counted. Toronto’s Michael Taylor shattered the class lap record in taking pole for the Thunder class with a lap at 1:47.524 on his BMW R1200S. Saturday morning practice times will also be used to set the line up for Sunday’s Amateur 600 Sport Bike race. This makes Marie-Josee Boucher the first woman to earn pole position for a national championship event. The Quebec City rider posted a time of 1:49.116 on her Honda CBR600RR. Qualifying for the Suzuki SV650 National Cup was also cancelled, so Derek Vammus of Orangeville, Ont. will start from pole in Sunday’s race after setting a 1:54.814 in Saturday practice. Feature races for all five national classes will go Sunday.
