The 21 young riders were uncertain up until shortly before the start of the second race of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup slicks or rain tyres? Both qualifying sessions were run on wet-weather tyres yesterday, resulting in the following front row with a French pole setter: Johann Zarco (FRA) / Cameron Beaubier (USA) / Luis Salom (ESP) / Lorenzo Savadori (ITA). The sun came out over the circuit just in time for the start of the race, but the track stayed damp and in some places even fully wet. All riders started the race on wet-weather tyres. 14 laps were scheduled the Spaniard Luis Salom made the best start this time and also led the field back over the line after the first lap. Pole setter Zarco fluffed his start, as did Cameron Beaubier. The first lead changes occurred after three laps, with the duel up front between Zarco and Salom. Beaubier started to make up ground in impressive fashion; in 3rd after just four laps. A five-way battle developed at the front of the field after five laps, with the following riders: Salom, Zarco, Beaubier, Savadori and Mitchell. They were separated by just two seconds. There were also two accidents to report Trabalon and Gloeckner crashed on lap 1, and Lucy Gloeckner (GER), the only lady in the Rookies Cup, spectacularly crashed into the gravel trap. Mitchell had to go through the gravel trap; Salom and Savadori lost contact with Zarco and Beaubier. Then Beaubier took the lead the young American crowning his fight back from P8 to P1! But the American was suddenly missing on lap 8. Beaubier low-sides in the first corner. The race seemed to have been decided after eight of fourteen laps in advantage of Johann Zarco. Then Daniel Kartheininger (GER) also crashes whilst running seventh. The best-placed Germans were now Messrs. Reiterberger and Schoenberger in P10 and P11. Zarco has a three-second advantage over the chasing man in the white Red Bull jersey of the overall leader, Lorenzo Savadori. Savadori got going as the track dried up, and catches up with the leading Frenchman with two laps to go. Savadori attacked Zarco several times but had to let the Frenchman go every time. Zarco was making perfect use of the dry racing line to stay in the lead. Zarco eventually secured his first win in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, albeit just narrowly ahead of the Jerez winner, Lorenzo Savadori. P3 in this thrilling and very dramatic race went to Kris Turner from the US. Best-placed Briton: Matthew Hoyle P4 Best-placed German: Markus Reiterberger P8 Best-placed Spaniard: Javier Cholbi P14 Savadori stays in the lead of the overall classification, followed by today’s winner Johann Zarco. Zarco: “What a race, at first the battle with Salom, then with Beaubier, then suddenly I had a clear lead and then Savadori catches up once again. The race couldn’t have gone on for much longer. Now I’m just happy!” Savadori: “I had a well-planned race and had already hoped to cross the line in first place. But the damp patches off the racing line made any attempt to overtake impossible. In the end I’m pretty satisfied with P2!” Turner: “I had a horrible start and dropped way back. Then I found a good rhythm, and suddenly several colleagues retired ahead of me. And then I knew it: I can still make the podium and so I did!”
