Both the team’s full-time ace, Geoff May, and substitute rider Martin Cardenas played starring roles on the opening day of action at the four-mile long circuit near Elkhart Lake, WI. Over the past two seasons May has earned a reputation as one of the championship’s foremost experts at Road America. Two seasons ago he claimed his first ever AMA podium with a second-place run in the Superstock race here, and last year he backed that up with a runner-up finish in the Supersport contest, one place ahead of teammate Michael Barnes. On Friday, May continued to shine at the track, heading the charts in the morning’s Supersport free practice aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600. The Georgian led the way with a 2:19.959 lap. He was also right in the thick of things aboard his powerful GSX-R1000 Superstock machine, clocking the third best time of the big-bore class session at 2: 16.409. At the end of the day, May said, “I’m just having fun. This is my favorite track and it just comes easy for me here, I can’t really explain it any other way. I’m really looking to get my first win and if it’s going to happen, this is one of the tracks it’s likely to happen at. “The track just suits my style. I got into racing because I like the high speeds and this track has plenty of fast sections. It doesn’t scare me while some riders might be a little intimidated by it. I love hauling through the woods, the heavy braking areas, and the great atmosphere with all the fans.” He continued, “We just rolled the Supersport bike off the truck and it was fast. We have some great guys on the team and we had some good notes from last year’s race where ‘Barney’ and I both got on the box. I finished second here two years ago and second again last year. Maybe the third time is the charm.” Colombian Cardenas was impressive at the previous round at Infineon Raceway, claiming a 12th place Supersport finish despite extremely late notice that he’d be filling in for the injured Barnes, who broke his wrist prior to the Formula Xtreme race at the California round. The former Spanish Supersport champion’s performance was even more inspiring on Friday, as he set the sixth best time in the Supersport practice (2:21.006) and then qualified in the fifth position for Saturday’s 60k Formula Xtreme race (2: 18.443). Despite it being his first trip to Road America circuit, Martin had climbed as high as second place in the session. Youngster Michael Beck was also competitive on Friday, logging the 13th fastest time of the Supersport practice at 2: 22.615. On Saturday Cardenas will contest the FX race and the team will also qualify for Sunday’s Supersport and Superstock races.
