Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich gave the thrill of a lifetime to one cable television show host and two local reporters with rides on his 2007-model, two-seat GSX-R1000 Superstock racebike around Infineon Raceway Thursday. “Wow! That was the most thrilling thing I’ve ever done,” Jessica York, host of Resort Sports Network’s “Thrill Seekers,” said after a three-lap tour of the 2.2-mile road course that included a top speed of 145 mph. “I’ve been shark diving in open water — no cage, I’ve been sky diving, I’ve been in a CHAMP car and a NASCAR, and this was by far the most thrilling. Complete respect and brand new appreciation for the sport.” Erin Lawley, Sports Reporter for the Napa Valley Register, a daily newspaper in northern California, came to Infineon Raceway to ride with Ulrich Thursday even though she rode on his two-seat racebike in 2006. “I just love riding on motorcycles, so it was an opportunity I would never pass up,” said Lawley, who said she planned to write about the experience in her blog, “Lawley’s Locker Room” at www.naparegister.com. Lawley wasn’t the only repeat customer for the two-seat program. After riding passenger with Steve Rapp (who then rode for Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki) at Infineon Raceway in 2003, Comcast Sports Net television news reporter Kymberlie McNicholas returned to ride with Ulrich. “I was actually more scared going into it than once I got on the Superbike,” said McNicholas, when asked what she thought of her ride. “I was actually thinking, ‘Wow! This is great.’ And I actually had more mobility than I thought I would. I thought I would be sitting there with my eyes closed and just hugging him tight with my neck to one side, but I was actually out there looking around, seeing what was going on and seeing the other rider out there (Ulrich’s teammate Robertino Pietri, who rode in close proximity to the two-seater to give a small impression of what it is like to be on track with other bikes) and seeing him pass us and how he would handle the turns. “It was amazing. To see him do it and know that we were going to follow suit, it was actually a little comforting. And he touched me out there a couple of times. Now I know what it’s like to pass out there on the course. It’s amazing how these riders can multi-task as much as they do. They’re not only watching where they are going, they have to watch what the other rider is doing [and] they have to watch the turns. So it is pretty amazing. I have a new respect for them.” For the last seven years Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki and Team M4 EMGO Suzuki (known formerly as Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki), have offered rides on two-seat racebikes to expose the sport of motorcycle road racing to members of the mainstream media and enhance their understanding of two-wheeled competition.
