Leo Vince/Pegram Racing Ducati’s Larry Pegram topped the first AMA Formula Xtreme practice session Friday at California Speedway, in Fontana, California. Shortly after recording his best time of 1:27.751 on his Dunlop-shod, 848cc, Ducati 749R, Pegram’s machine started leaking oil from its oil cooler, forcing him to come into the pits. The session was halted halfway through for a crash involving Erion Honda’s Josh Hayes. Hayes lowsided as soon as he touched the brakes for turn three but said he didn’t get a scratch in his long slide on the asphalt. Hayes returned to the track on his back-up CBR600RR and went faster even though he had not ridden the bike since Daytona. The ambient temperature at California Speedway has been unseasonably high Friday, reaching 96 degrees F during the Formula Xtreme practice session.
